BW,

Is this actually chambered for the 257 TCU instead of the 6mm?

Just make sure it is the correct neck diameter in the chamber.

You may have a 257 barrel with a neck in the chamber for a 6mm bullet when seated in the cartridge. Make sure you have room in there for seating a 257 bullet in a case.

I think 257 TCU dies are a bit rare. May have to lay out more bucks for them.

Regards

It's good to see you get things worked out with VV. I only wish that I had the same treatment from other barrel makers. Good luck.

Buckweet,
I can attest to your patience. I will check the barrel out and go from there. If it is a 257 then I will check the chamber diamentions, barrel etc. I think I can get some dies for you, and possibly even work up some loads.

Dave,
It has always puzzled me how you manage to keep tract of barrels through the manufacturing process without some kind of identifier on the barrel. I did not catch what the story was behind buckwheat's barrel, but it appears to be in regard to caliber of the barrel.

Regardless, for what it's worth from an old fart whose suggestions don't mean a helluva lot there, I suggest you do like I always did making barrels. Stamp the caliber and twist rate on the bottom of the lug. I also stamped invoice numbers or tag numbers on them. Redoing stuff all the time eats your lunch and runs the costs up on barrels for everyone. There is no free lunch, and while customers may think you're a great guy, and you are of course, in the end THEY collectively all pay for your mistakes. You have to bump your barrel prices up in order to stay in business while you redo stuff.

Remember the old joke about the young bull and the old bull looking at the herd of cows? The young bull wanted to rush right in & the old bull wanted to just take his time and do the job right?

To this old bull's way of thinking, there is entirely too much "redoing" stuff from several sectors. What good is it to bust your butt trying to meet the demand syndrome with fast service, for example, if you just end up redoing it later? It is not just the fault of the shop doing the work. It is largely a matter of the various shops trying their best to satisfy a quick service mind set too many people suffer from, unwittingly. This "fast service" all too often produces "half fast" work and results in much higher prices and unexpected delays.

Mike,
I knew eventually you would see this and I knew what was to follow. You are correct, but remember my last name is not Stratton or Sip.(Although sometimes I voice my opinion like I don't care about repercussions)
I can agree about stamping and will bring it up again.

Davey,
I have said it many times and will repeat that I am all for you guys. You have a great thing going, and all things considered, with no more background than you, collectively, had working for your neighbor, Fred, you have done a really outstanding job. I'm proud of you. You just have a few zits that need squeezing.

During one, shall we say, altercation, you suggested I work with a barrel maker to make a difference. Trouble with that is the basic question of who is the tail and who is the dog? Normally the dog wags the tail, you know, not the other way around. This old dog is hard to wag.

I'd love to work more closely with you. I even thought of moving to your area just to make it handier to work back and forth, keeping orders straight with Steve if nothing else. [Wink] Who knows, I might even lure you away to work for me. [Big Grin]

The stars are not aligned right for all this to happen, of course. It is not meant to be.

I hope my suggestions make a difference, but it is still up to the family, I know.

Best of luck, and don't take my comments too personally. I like you guys.

Mike

All I have to say is it's a darn good thing the mistake didn't happen the other way [Eek!]

Anybody else thought about what would have happened if Buchweet had ordered a 257 and got a 6mm barrel chambered with a 257 reamer????

.....might not have turned out quite so harmless...........

Mark,
You would not get a .25 cal. pilot (something just under .250," normally about .249") into a .236" 6mm bore. I assume they are using pretty much standard pilots, so that is some insurance.

Hadn't thought about the pilot........still a spooky thought.......

Wait a minute, I've read about a guy who, in his youth, cut a 30-06 chamber in a 6.5 Jap rifle and shot 30 cal bullets through the 6.5 barrel!!! In fact, he posted about the "conversion" on this board a few days ago........guess his reamer didn't have a pilot???

Just found the thread about the Jap rifle again, says he used a "half reamer" what ever that is....
