* Brenneke of America Recalls Slugs
BRENNEKE OF AMERICA, L.P., has announced a recall of certain lots of its Black Magic Magnum 12-guage 3-inch (76mm) slug cartridges. CUSTOMERS SHOULD NOT USE THE CARTRIDGES BECAUSE THEY POSE A RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY. The recall applies only to cartridges from the following lot numbers, which are printed on the inside of the box's top flap:
1.0.01.07.08; 1.0.02.07.08; 1.0.03.07.08

Customers who do not have the original box should call Brenneke at 877-684-0477, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Central Time, M~F, for assistance in determining whether their slugs are affected by the recall. This recall does ot apply to any other lot numbers of this model cartridge or to any other Brenneke ammunition, including the Black Magic Short Magnum 12-gauge 2-inch (70mm) slugs.
Brenneke has determined that a limited number of cartridges from the affected lots may contain low- or no-powder charges that may result in the slug remaining in the barrel. Firing a second shot into an obstructed barrel may cause serious firearm damage and may subject the shooter and bystanders to a risk of serious injury.
Customers SHOULD NOT USE these cartridges and should not keep them where others could use them. Customers should call 877-684-0477 to make arrangements for the return and replacement of the affected cartridges. Customers may also call that number with any questions about the recall or visit www.brennekeusa.com.
Brenneke regrets any inconvenience this recall may cause, but remains committed to the safety of its customers and to producing the highest quality shotgun slugs on the market, as the company has done since 1898.

* Important Warning Notice to Reloaders of .500 S&W Ammo

Commercial ammunition by CorBon is now being manufactured with rifle primers. The original ammunition by CorBon used pistol primers. No doubt that both ammunition types are in circulation as well as brass from Starline that has primer pockets for both pistol and rifle primers.

You can identify the primer pocket by examining the head-stamp of both CorBon and Starline brass. Brass manufactured for rifle primers will have the letter "R" following the word CorBon and the Starline symbol on the head-stamp. If it does not, the brass has a pistol primer pocket. DO NOT RELOAD RIFLE PRIMERS IN BRASS DESIGNED FOR USE WITH LARGE PISTOL PRIMERS. The rifle primer pocket in the brass WITH AN "R" HEADSTAMP is deeper than pistol primer pocket. Rifle primers will stand "proud" if loaded in brass designed for large pistol primers. This scenario is unsafe and will significantly increase the possibility of "simultaneous ignition" in a revolver. Such an event could be catastrophic for the firearm and the shooter. Please be aware and take care when reloading this high-pressure revolver cartridge.

Note: Hornady manufactured .500S&W ammunition has and will continue to use large pistol primers in its commercial product. Do Not attempt to use rifle primers with Hornady head-stamped .500S&W brass.

Additional note: Use of re-loaded ammunition in all Magnum Research firearm products voids any and all warranty for that product.

* [May 2006] Arctic Cat Announces Snowmobile Recall

THIEF RIVER FALLS, MN Arctic Cat Inc. has recalled 52,000 snowmobiles due to faulty fuel tanks that could crack and leak.

No injuries from the defects have been reported, but the company has sent a letter to owners warning them to immediately stop using the snowmobiles.

* FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Release #06-004

CPSC Announces ANPR on ATVs

WASHINGTON, D.C. Furthering its commitment to improving the safety of ATVs and to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries nationwide, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted unanimously to issue an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) pertaining to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).

Stemming from the June 8, 2005 memo from CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton to the staff, the ANPR is a significant step in a broad and comprehensive review of all existing and potential ATV safety rules and regulations. The ANPR invites written comments from the public regarding the risks of injury associated with ATVs and ways in which these risks could be addressed. The public has 60 days to provide technical comments to the Commission about the ANPR.

In addition to comments on the ANPR, the staff will consider the issues highlighted in the Chairmans memo, including pre-sale training and certification requirements, formal notification to buyers of safety rules, and performance and design standards, as well as various other approaches that could reduce ATV-related deaths and injuries.

In recent years, there has been a very troubling and dramatic increase in the numbers of ATV-related injuries. For example, the 2004 estimated number of emergency-room-treated injuries for all ages -- 136,100 -- reflects an increase of about eight percent over the 2003 estimate of 125,500 and is an increase of 101% over the 1998 estimate of 67,800. Even more alarming ...is the 2004 estimated number of emergency-room-treated injuries for children under 16 -- 44,700 -- which is a 16% increase over the 2003 estimate of 38,600 and a 78% over the 1998 estimate of 25,100.

In addition to the vote on the ANPR, the Commission today voted unanimously to defer a final decision on a petition submitted by the Consumer Federation of America and other groups that calls upon CPSC to ban adult-size, four-wheel ATVs sold for the use of children under the age of 16.
