The mother tells Action News she “didn’t have time to get scared.” When she heard the door to her home on Woodrow Wilson being kicked in, she immediately warned the three teenage intruders and then opened fire.

One of the teens dropped a handgun on his way out the door. He then tried to get back inside the house a second time, but was again met with gunfire. Once again, he took off and all three were arrested shortly after the incident by Detroit Police.

Police were able to apprehend all three suspects as they fled the area. They are described as being teenagers. None

My only comment is that she should reflect a bit and decide if she is ready to take a human life. In this case it worked out fine, but watching the video that one teenager picked up his gun and ran back into the house. It could have turned out a lot worse, especially for one of her children. If you are going to shoot, make sure the threat is over before you stop.

I agree! Know your target and hit it! Don't just fire aimlessly. Doesn't look like it was a low light situation. She could have hit bystanders.

Lemme get this straight. The woman defends her home and children, no one is injured, the perps are arrested, and y'all are bitching.......not everyone is an ace shot under stress, including many of the posters on AR. Just as an example, I knew a 2600 club pistol shooter on the La State Police, he was hot chasing a bank robber, robber bailed, and was running down a railroad track.....27 shots fired by both individuals, no hits.....being kidded about it later, he said, "It ain't the same when the target is shooting back."

She could have hit innocent bystanders in her backyard.....give me a break. What would you want her to do, invite them to sit down for tea?

LIKE HE SAID.
Unless you can relate your own PERSONAL experience of precision shooting under fire...with no formal training..
I'd recommend keeping quiet on this one.

Hmmm, I was not aware that she was "under fire". My apologies for thinking that one of the responsibilities of owning a firearm for self defense might be to think about, ahead of time, the circumstances under which it might be used.
As to 'formal training", it doesn't seem to help much of law enforcement very much.

That way they don't come back for revenge either. Big Grin Curious how this could happen in Detroit. We're always told has some of the strongest anti gun laws in the US. Talking about the lady having a gun, not the perps.

MI gun laws have changed a lot for the better in the last 10 years. It is easy to get a permit.

The black Detroit police chief is calling for people to arm themselves to fight crime.

Not the same old Detroit for sure.

She fired. They ran. That's a successful use of a firearm in self defense.

The one problem I see to some of your answers, is where did the bullets go? If she would have hit the intruders, the chances are the bullets would have stayed in the bodies. Someone commented on bystanders being around, and that is my point about being accurate when you shoot...those bullets that missed completely still had a lot of velocity and energy to do damage to whatever, or whoever, was behind the intruders.

Very poor video angles but it appears much of the garage was her backstop. But yes, where the bullets are going is always a concern.

National average the police miss 80% percent of their shots.

More info to chew on regarding police hit percentage.

quote:
According to a 2008 RAND Corporation study evaluating the New York Police Department’s firearm training, between 1998 and 2006, the average hit rate during gunfights was just 18 percent. When suspects did not return fire, police officers hit their targets 30 percent of the time.
