Earlier this week we had a 40 year old former marine awakened by an alarm on his detached garage he has a corner house with streets on two sides. He apparently armed himself with a fish filet knife and went to investigate. It was 3am in the morning and almost all the streets have street lights so it wasn't totally dark. The homeowner walked into the garage and confronted the burglar, a 52 year old repeat offender, who stated get your gun, implying that there was another burgular, either case the suspect was stabbed one time. He exited the garage ran down the street leaving a blood trail to where he had his car a block away. Drove himself to a hospital where he latter died. The states attorney stated no charges will be filed.
Illinois does not have a castle doctrine, nor can we use deadly force to protect property, however those magical words of get your gun gave the homeowner to feel his life was in danger
There was no discussion on whether the crook attacked him or vice versa but needless to say it went the right way....In chicago that is great precedence in my opinion

Good decision by the DA and zero jail costs.
