Hi all,

I was asked to suggest some 9mm handgun choices for someone going overseas. Looking for suggestions! I'm kinda ignorant in this area so I'll give you all the criteria- Needs to be only mildly concealeable, external hammer is good, steel (preferred) or alloy frame.

Browning Hi Power is up there on the list, any other suggestions?

Whatever you do, avoid Para.....if something goes wrong their customer service is about on a par with Obama.

Suggestions, considering external hammer, would be the CZ75 or CZ2075 RAMI, the Springfield EMP. If that is not an issue, the Kahr PM9, one of the Glocks, or even the new Beretta. I would strongly advice getting a 9 in a pistol that was designed for 9, and not one altered to accept that cartridge.

+1 on the Browning Hi-power, or anything else designed by John Browning.

THe CZ75 is an updated version of the High Power, and is another quality gun.

Sig 228 is hard to beat. Steel frame, external hammer, compact frame and 15 rounds with the Magger mags, and very reliable.

I handled the FNP-9 the other day. I really like the safety set up. Safety and decocker all on one lever. You can chamber a round, decock it, put the safty on, and still have a long 2 stage trigger for the first round.

I am not a 9mm kind of guy...

But the High Power is one of the best.

I have a lot of experience with the Glock 17
due to "rules".

I shot them a bunch. They are extremely rugged and extremely reliable.

If you must/or just want, to carry a 9mm, a Glock 17 is hard to beat...

I'd go with the CZ compact, but then again I am a CZ fan. It is some shorter, but still very useable.

BHP can be sort of finnicky, like any 1911. Bugs need to be worked out and some alterations need to be made to make them a true battle pistol you'd stake your life on. You may not be able to find a smith over seas that has 1911/BHP experience.
Glock or Sig would be a MUCH BETTER choice if this is a duty pistol that will be needed in action.
G19 if G17 is not concealable enough.

Mark, you haven't said to what use the 9mm will be put. Concealed carry? That is a whole subset of 9mm's. No requirement for concealment? The Browning High Power, Glock 17, or, my favorite Glock 17L. Of course the S&W 659, and CZ clones (eg. EAA Witness) give you the first shot DA capability.

I'd forgotten about the EAA witness, I shot a couple boxes through one of those a few years ago and forgot about it!

Basically it will be an open carry gun. I'm going to let my biases come through and say there are a lot to glocks that I do not like, most notably being the lack of a safety other than the nib on the trigger and the plastics.

Sig 228 is also a good suggestion. I looked up the FNP 9 and too much plastic IMHO (I know, I'm old school)

Thanks all for the suggestions so far!

You can't go wrong with a Sig. 226,228, and 229 are all great pistols. These are exposed hammer, all metal, high capacity guns.

You may not "like" the glocks but they work as advertised. They are battle proven with parts readily available. If this is life and death use the best, not what you "like".

Since you said going overseas, I think that limits the choices a good bit. Browning Hi Power, CZ, and Glock are likely the best choices given the availability of parts and magazines. Sig might also be a good choice based on those same criteria depending on where in the world, he'll be.

SIG with the short reset trigger (SRT).

And I'd go with the P226 over the P228. No harder to conceal and longer sight radius.

FWIW a serious for real terrorist killer friend of mine swears by and uses Sigs by choice, but not 9mms by choice. Big Grin

All things considered, based on info provided, I'd go with a Glock or Sig.

That's a pretty target pistol, Segfej!

How well does it shoot lead bullets?

Do those sights ever catch on things when carrying concealed?

Glock for a pure fight gun. Look no further.

Hi-Power for a silky-smooth shooter that will fight well, too.

My first choice for a steel 9mm would be the CZ-75B, which also comes in compact version. Second choice would be the Hi-Power.

I carry a concealed pistol only for the last-ditch-no-option-left scenario so a 9mm para limited capacity H&K P7M8 is my usual CCW these days. In the past, I've also carried a Detonics Mk V .45 ACP. Either pistol conceals well under a light jacket or loose sweatshirt.

I am not sure why Glocks keep being recomended, when the OP criteria says EXTERNAL hammer.

That being said, if there is flexibility on that the G17 or G19 would be the way to go for overseas use.

If the Hammer is really an issue and I am not sure why it would be, then I would go either with 1911 in 9MM or BHP in 9MM. I own and recomend both and own 3 of the 4 mentioned above.

I love the way my BHP feels but it is hard to beat a SIG P226. They are very reliable, accurate and durable.

Darn, now I want another one! Cool

Change the sights (I don't like them much anyway) and no one shoots lead bullets at real targets DaManifesto.

Thing is, Segfej, a rifled barrel like the P226 shoots both lead and jacketed very well!

And you don't have to change the sights or worry about a supply of quality magazines (including 20 rounders).

No doubt but it still has a short barrel, a trigger designed by Barney Rubble, and a frame made from recycled screen doors. And really - no one but paper shooters gives a crap about lead bullets.
