I finally received my CHL in the mail this weekend! So glad I live in a "shall issue" state. I jumped through the required hoops, paid the requisite kickback and now I have permission from the state to carry concealed.

Now if the state legislature would just decriminalize open carry . . .

I have an IMI Uzi Eagle (Jericho 947/Magnum Research Baby Eagle) compact .40 S&W. I am waiting for the Remora holster to arrive.

I plan to carry at the 8 o'clock position (I am a southpaw).

My wife has a Sig 232 .380 Auto. I had been planning on getting my CHL but wife was uncomfortable with the idea. Then she took an NRA "Women On Target" class. When she got out of the class the first words out of her mouth were "When I get MY gun . . ." She scored a 94% on the written test (I scored 98%) and 243 out of a possible 250 (I scored 245) on the shooting part. Considering I'm 60 and she is 58 I think we did pretty well.

She had never shot a gun before last September. The first firearm she ever discharged was my FNAR semi-auto .308 Win/7.62X51 NATO. Took to the Sig like a duck to water. I expect her to want to start shooting my Rem 597 any day now.

Congrats on the CHL. Those are a lot of hoops to jump through. Is your wife getting her CHL as well? I don't have one, but I've been thinking about it. I'm sure she likes the Sig. My exhusband loved them and had a small collection. I have a Walther .380 Smiler Is your wife on AR too?

NavyVet,
Yup, the wife has hers. We took the class together.

I don't know where you live but if by "God's Country" you mean Texas then as a vet you get 50% off the initial and renewal fees. If you are within 365 days after separating then Texas will WAIVE the FEE entirely! After that you get renewals for 50% off. Current state fee is $140 and renewals are $70. My wife paid full fee but will be past 60 when she renews so will get 50% off renewal.

Go for it. You will be doing your part to reduce crime.

Thanks for that bit of info. I knew veterans got a discount, just didn't know how much of one. I was active duty '90-'96.
I was talking to someone the other day about choosing an appropriate pistol for concealed carry. .380? 9mm? Semi-auto? Revolver? There are a lot of opinions out there! He told me, "Why settle on one? This is Texas! You should have at least 10." Lol!

Navyvet Get a revolver they go bang when you pull the trigger. If you carry a auto you HAVE to pratice clearing malfuntions. A revolver with lasar sights is perfect for self defence. In a defencive situation the less you have to deal with the better. Most people do not train enough the carry autos but they are all the rage. I spent 19.5 years in spec ops. I will be transiting to a revolver with a laser when the time comes (as I get older and loose some of my motor skills).

Mdvjrp93, I see you are in South Carolina and your advice is fine but is not the only way. In my opinion the best way is a combination of different types and sizes,

I have zero idea what your rules are there in SC but Mr Mullins and Navyvet are in Texas, and we have some unique rules here!

We have two ways you can get your CHL in Texas. There are two classifications of license here, and which you get makes a difference what type you may carry. If you qualify with a semi-auto (SA license) then you may carry any kind of legal handgun and/ or caliber you choose, or as many as you choose at a time. I, however, you qualify with a revolver, or single shot or double derringer then that is all you can carry. You then have a NSA license (No SEMI AUTO) no matter which license you get the cost is the same so the SA is the one to get.

I got my license three months before the date it became legal to carry! And have carried every day since that day. When the Must issue license was passed by the state, there were so many applications that it took 90 days to get my license and you could apply six months before they would be legal. I’ve legally armed, one way or another all my adult life, and I’m 75 years old today. In Texas you may carry a rifle or shotgun legally anyway you please, as they are not regulated here.

In answer to Mr. Mullins about the open carry, I asked about that when I took my first classes for my first license a few years ago. I was told by the state instructor that they had considered that, but it was decided people would be far safer if they carried concealed. Their reason being we had we had been having a rash of late night restaurant robberies committed by two or three perps. They would come in more than one door, and only one would rob the cashier, while the others canvassed the crowd . Then the perps would all pull guns and rob all the patrons all the doors being blocked. The instructor said they had used that type of robbery to settle on concealed only because in that situation the perps would know who was armed up front, but with so many people carrying concealed they had to watch everyone in the restaurant. This makes it harder to spot armed people and take them out before they knew they were in trouble.
