I think this guy deserved to be shot and killed.

But my question is shooting 18 rounds in a highly congested environment. Is there some change in police techniques or something (high capacity pistols) but it seems like when the cops start shooting they keep shooting.

Orlando changed police rules on shooting at cars.

I don't see anything in the story about the number of shots fired.

And one does shoot until the treat is stopped

18 shots fired and one of the officers was grazed by a police bullet. Since I know zero about police work and very little about pistol deensive shooting. I just find it strange that targets needs so many rounds and what hit ratio is. Every thing I shoot with is 375 H&h, 375 ruger and 30/06 and is not primate. I am thinking of using .308 on some Texas white tails soon.

I don't know a whole lot about the training officers receive these days, but my observations of police officers at the local club range and shooting against them in competition that a couple things become rather clear...

1)that virtually all cops think they are somewhere between James Butler Hickock and Dave Michulek in their ability with firearms...
2)their dilusions of adequacy DO NOT show up on their paper scores...

They also have a tendency that is similar to that of several combat veterans I've known they all seem to have "know it all" syndrome about the foreign weapons their opponents had and tend to "Confabulate" details......

I have an uncle that insists that 7.62x51NATO weapons can function and fire RUSSIAN "AK Ammo".

I've decided that the best tack to take with the uncle is jusn not discuss it with him

But I will point out that the average crook is far worse...

Still most of them think because they are cops they know all about guns...

But I remember a statistic from back when PD's across the country were switching from revolvers to automatics
that on average NYPD fired averaged 1.4hits per six rounds fired and were nearly about the worst...
LAPD was about the best marksman and scored 2.3hits per 6.

And this made lots of people wonder why more innocent bystanders weren't hit, and what the new 15shot capacity automatics were going to increase the odds of hitting the innocent....

If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day!
Those who manage to provoke themselves into other activities have only themselves to blame.

Quite a few of the police are not diligent shooters. Those of us who have been to Gunsite know that along with mindset, concentrate on that front sight.Hi cap mags are all well + good if you plan on missing a lot.

I don't want to get into a pissing match with anyone here but I would like you all to keep in mind a few things about NYPD.

Unfortunately for us here, it sure as hell 'aint the way it is out West!

There are 40,000 officers and exactly ONE police range in Rodmans Neck, Bronx.

Cops here qualify ONCE a year...100 rounds, standing at the firing line and shooting at a paper silhouette target. Yearly qualifications are like an assembly line...shoot, clean you gun, go home.

Most NY cop's, myself included are City kids who never fired a handgun before they were sworn in.

There is essentially no access to public ranges. There is exactly ONE in Manhattan, and one or two in the Bronx and Brooklyn. There are several in Long Island and Westchester County as well as upstate, but they are a hassle to get to and they are still indoor ranges.

If it weren't for the fact that I was in SWAT and had pretty much unlimited access to ammo, range time, and training, I would have been in the same boat as everyone else.

The powers that be decided that our Glocks needed a NY Trigger PLUS, so these kids now are wrestling with 12+ triggers.

Throw in the fact that NYC has 9 Million people packed in a dense area (most streets are literally a sea of humanity!) it is a wonder that bystanders aren't shot every day.

Guys, I'm not saying that out of 40,000 cops there aren't allot of assholes who shouldn't be trusted with a sharp pencil BUT please think about the big picture before you pass judgement!
