Underwood sells a pretty hot 95-grain, +P, FTX load (tested at 1200 fps) that many claim brings the Makarov up to an acceptable level for self defense. Currently, I carry mine with Hornady Critical Defense ammo that shoots the same FTX bullet, but 200 fps slower. I have not tried the Underwood stuff out of a reluctance to fire +P ammo in my Bulgarian Makarov pistol. However, I've recently read that the only drawback to shooting the Underwood ammo in a Mak is the excessive recoil, which is easily tamed by changing the 17-pound slide spring to a $9 Wolf, 19 or 21-pound spring. Anyone have any experience shooting this stuff in a Makarov?

No answers yet. I carry Hornady XTP or Blazer Gold Dots, haven't chronoed either round. A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work.
