I shot my first handgun 50 years ago. It was a remingtion rolling block in 22 short I was 5 years old the next was a colt officers model revolver in 38spl after that it was a 1911 45.

The frist one I owned was a colt woodsman then a Ruger securty six in 357 now many years and dozens of guns later. 33 plus years as a LEO and many of them as an instructor.

I carried 5 shot revolvers to Hi cap autos on the job. I carried mouse guns to 44 mags off duty. I have carried a gun 99.9 percent of the time for the lasst 33 plus years.

A few times that I have had to fly I couldn't carry. I have shot and hand loaded who knows how many 10000's of rounds.I have shot many types of pistol matchs bullseye IPSC ect.

Just few points what I learned

1. a carry gun has to go bang every time you pull the trigger

2. cailber is not as important as having it on you

3. type of gun is not as important as having it on you

4. any hand gun that well shoot with in around 4 inchs is plenty good at 25 yards. ( very accurate guns are nicer as long as they work.)

5. I'll take a smaller gun on me over a bigger gun left at home any day.

6. evry body has differant opinons on what is the best. All I ask is if you are backing me up please bring a gun that works and that you can hit your target with. Other wise I could care less what you carry.

If you ask my opinon I'll give to you.

7. if I knew I was going to a gun fight I bring a rifle and plenty of help with rifles or bigger stuff.

8. handguns are carried because having a rifle with you isn't paractal all the time.

9. No one holster is the best for every time you need to carry.

10. Paractice as offten as you can the more the better.

Right now I carry two guns more then others that I own a Glock 23 and a Ti 41 mag. revolver.

I do carry others if those two don't fit the situation.

Some of you will have differant opinons then mine others well agree with some.

But it is a great county where most of us have the choice to buy carry and use many differant handguns. Big Grin

I agree, nothing fits all situations at all times.

Be flexible, but be practiced and proficient with what you carry.

Most of the time it's a Hi Power or Combat Commander when I'm away from home now. One thing that is always in my picket is my 342Ti, .38spl.

Caliber, type or other normal points of argument are really of little matter. Carrying anything is better than screaming for help like a little girl.

Thx. Great insight and I agree 100%..BUT, would add practice every chance you can. Make time for it, it is THAT important!

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

For fun I took a "self defense" karate class with some friends and their dads when we were in high school. Upon the "attack" you are supposed to get into a position and yell "KARATE", to throw your asallent off balance. My friend's dad found a fake gun in a tub of training weapons and sneaked it into his waist band under his shirt. When it was his turn instead of getting into position and yelling "KARATE" he pulled the gun, yelled "45" and shot the instructor. We died laughing.

And though it isn't a good primary defense in many instances, I think it doesn't hurt any to yell "help" or "call the cops" or even just scream while you're using more active means of engagement. The sooner you attract attention and get some assistance, likely the better off you will be.

If the perp is lying there doing his last twitches as the LEOs arrive, that's fine. But if it you lying there when they show up, you're gonna need all the help you can get, ASAP.

This ain't Rambo, it's survival.

Loud verbalization of whatever it is you want the bad guy to do/not do will help when it all goes to grand jury/court.
