The ladies at the village store in town was asking about them. What do those in the know think would work for store use?

Piss poor for defensive against some body that is armed. Expensive one shot tasers have specific use in the use of force continuum but it is limited. I would recommend a good spray multiple shots works well most of the time. Still it is not the thing to use against an armed subject. A good size can, bear size would be best IHO range, multiple shots, available. Back the spray up with a good gun and some training with both. They well have things covered. For what a Taser costs They can have multiple cans of spray around and have money left.

Interesting! I thought being hit by a taser was a drop on the spot thing? What kind of range is the bear spray, 15 ft or so would be good. Drunks would be the most common, but one could be armed I suppose.

I would recommend a can of Raid hornet spray. It will shoot twenty or more feet, can blind the thug instantly, is completely non-lethal and with treatment the blindness is temporary. It is also quite innocuous sitting on the counter. The weird thing about tasers and pepper sprays is that they are considered dangerous weapons in some areas and you can't carry them without a permit. In some jurisdictions a private citizen can't possess them at all. The can of raid is less expensive extremely effective and there are no questions asked when buying it. Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

I see using a non approved type of spray could lead to huge liabilities for a business. Use something that is meant for self defense unless there are no alternatives.

The kimber pepper blaster 2 seems to have good reviews. Any thoughts on that one PD Shooter?

You also need to be very careful with local laws for a taser. In my locale, they are considered firearms and need the required storage and ccw permits. Larry "Peace is that brief glorious moment in history, when everybody stands around reloading" -- Thomas Jefferson

I'd ask a couple questions of these people. Are they gun people? If no stop here. If they are, they need to have a type of weapon they are comfortable with, practice with at least enough to be competent at twelve feet or less, and have handy. Something double action only, with factory ammo. No trigger jobs. The bad guy will most likely be the first to act. The ladies need to have whatever in their hand and ready to go. If it were my place, I'd play out different scenarios with someone to get a feel of how the ladies are going to react. A Taser, along with the hornet killer, an asp might be an option if they are not gun people. My issue with the pepper sprays is they are hard to put into action unless they are in your hand with the safety off. The hornet spray would be less likely to scare regular customers. The clerk could have it in their hand and say something like "those darn bees" if they felt threatened. Depending on where I am or where I'm going, I carry a Taser C2 in my pocket along side my hammerless S&W Airweight .38 with +P loads. It won't jam up in my pocket due to lint. In winter, I carry my Sig P229 .40 S&W in a holster under my vest or coat. This way I have a choice and can have my hand on whatever ready to go. My Taser is yellow and looks more like a banana or cell phone sticking out of my pocket than anything that shoots. The darts have a range of about 15 ft. They do not have to penetrate the skin to be effective. After you use it, you can lay it down with it still shocking the perp and retreat to a safe distance or you can stay at the scene and jolt them again when the initial shock stops. The handle can also be used as a contact device for a second perp. The darts will work just hanging in the clothes. You get two cartridges with each purchase, a practice cartridge and CD instruction tape. If it is used in self defense, Taser will replace it free. My wife is a nurse and can carry her C2 with her from the parking deck to her locker where she works. A gun would be prohibited. So is pepper spray. I've had my CCW for 8 years now. It really has become a last go to thing for me, given the legal climate in our country. There are good articles in "American Handgunner" about weapons used. The latest is Santibanes v. Tomball in Texas. A legal shooting by a cop that resulted in a half million dollar civil settlement. It seems if you are outside your home, the castle doctrine doesn't apply. You will be sued in civil court resulting in years of grief and maybe loss of your bank account. I suppose it is better off than being shot by a bad guy. Still, the use of a weapon should be last resort and thought about beforehand carefully.

I am not an expert, but have there not been some instances where tasers were deployed by LEO's and were ineffective? If so, I would prefer a chemical solution with, if possible, a backup firearm. This seems to be one of those cases where it absolutely positively has to work! Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. I had never heard of a taser that didn't work on someone, but nothing is for certain. This is a small town country store, so it is more for peace of mind against the drunk they refuse to sell beer to, then a hard core criminal types.

Something to bear in mind is that tasers have been know to cause fatalities. LEOs may be able to get away with liability, not so sure about civilian use. Again, just throwing this out there. I am not an expert. In fact I believe that there have been lawsuits against at least one manufacturer. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. The biggest reason that they fail is both prongs don't make good solid contact, heavy clothing, One of the prongs get ripped out

P dog are you a LEO? I detect a certain amount of hypocrisy here-- Any common item used in selfdefense is/should be legal. By your working definition hot water would be a bad thing. There are improvised weapons that one can or well used when there is nothing better at hand. I have no trouble with that at all. Planning on using something that could create greater harm then necessary is another matter. I house wife grapping a can of hornet spray and using it to defend her self because nothing was handier would be fully justified. A business planning on using is whole another matter.

There have ben numerous incidents both here in the Phoenix AZ area and in Roseburg, Oregon where I used to live that involved the use of tasers by police which did NOT work sufficiently to stop an aggressive contact. In fact there is, as I understand it, a current lawsuit here filed by the mother of a man who was killed by the local police in a situation where the Taser did NOT do its job. The result of the taser not doing the job was that-one of the officers present took him down with a department taught martial arts choke hold, which resulted in his death some significant time later. Apparently he never lost consciousness, but quit breathing and died enroute after being placed in a squad car and wile being transported for booking. I have no idea who will or should prevail in that lawsuit, but if the information made public about it is correct, it definitely states that the Taser was ineffective. And there have been local events where a subject was tasered as many as three times by police without it stopping him. Could be drugs, could be the phase of the moon. I don't care why they didn't work, and very much like the idea of hornet spray for possible protection of myself. Until I make a final decision about that, I'll just continue to carry my S&W Model 940 everywhere I go. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.
