The odds of me ever having to whip out a pistol are almost nil, but ...

It would seem that it would be needed as quick as possible ... the frantic store clerk scenario.

As the instructor of my CC class mentioned, the fastest location is appendix carry. Under a jacket, a sweater , etc.

Okay, so I got a gut, just not as big as it used to be and appendix carry is do-able.

After a fortune in trying pistols and two drawers full of holsters, a Kahr PM/CMxx with an appendix carry IWB holster seems like the most logical, for me.

FWIW. Maybe not much.

I have a real problem pointing a gun (Glock especially) at my hip/groin area. One shot there and you will probably die from blood loss, best case, you loose a leg.

The 4 o'clock position keeps the gun pointed back, away from anything vital. It's nearly as quick, fairly comfortable, pretty concealable.

To each his own though. It is a popular carry position, I know a lot of guys and gals carry that way. It just concerns me a little.

That said, I have multiple guns/carry positions that I utilize based on clothing and situation.

There are just too many situations that the butt carry position isn't going to help. Like driving or riding in a car, seated in a restaurant.

I figure butt-cheek carry is like adding safeties. It is just adding another delay. They may be comfortable and I'd rather have a bullet hole in a cheek than to shoot my dick off, but in the split second that you might have to save your life that gun better be close and handy and get into unobstructed action ASAP.

All these DAO autos these days are just essentially auto feeding revolvers. Can't fire unless you pull the trigger.

But appendix is still slow, number 3, compared to your hand on the gun in a pant's front pocket (#2) or your hand on the gun in a jacket pocket (#1).

If I'm walking down a street in c country I want to be wearing slacks or shorts with big pockets (#2) and/or a jacket (#1). Anytime #1 or #2 isn't possible, I can't think of anything faster than appendix carry in some variation or another.

I don't discount the benefits, it's popular, quick, and comfortable especially for those with certain back problems. I just don't prefer it. It will take me longer to draw, but, well, everything about concealed carry presents a time issue. Nothing is as quick as having a gun in your hand at all times. Open carry at 3:00 position, probably next best thing.

No matter where you carry, there is no substitute for practice. Practice clearing clothing, practice taking off safety, if it has one. Sitting at the range with all the time in the world to make 10 shots in a minute is no substitute for quickly getting the gun out and in the position to be effective.

Few people practice this.

Agree with the appendix carry, when wearing a jacket or sweater. Also good while seated eg. driving a car. I have a problem drawing from a "small of the back" position or anything past 4 o'clock for that matter. Having said that, in Florida I find a Ruger LCR in a holster in a pants or shorts pocket to be the position I use the most. Not necessarly the fastest though.

After carring for close 35 years now almost every day 90 percent of the time its strong side about 4 O'clock in pancake or serpa holster.

But I also carry in fanny pack, reaction side shoulder holster all depends on the need at the time.

I am thinkig about a chest rig for some of bigger stuff whe out in the woods.

Body size, handgun size the way one is dressed all come into play.

No one way suits every body or every situation

Look up on youtube: The hit man Teddy Medina the sparrow. He takes the deep conceal appendix carry to a new level , even with a full size 1911.
In the summer while wearing shorts with large cargo pockets a Desantis pocket holster works great with an extra magazine pocket built in.
With pants or shorts with no cargo pockets try the IWB COMP TAC Minotaur appendix holster. It is fast, deep conceal and will work with any type of upper body clothing. There are similar products that will do the same such as crossbreed holsters.
I wish some one made a quality IWB cross draw leather holster. It is fast and accessible while sitting, driving or injured in the right hand.
I guess we all are trying for the one holster that will do it all, but reality dictates different holsters for different scenarios.

Forgot to address the larger heavy frame handgun in the field issue.
It is always better to wear than to carry. When you can spread the weight over a large area, it makes for much more comfort.
Cross the Chest carry for me has been my favorite. I currently use a Diamond D Leather holster from Alaska.
Another quality manufacturer is The Simply Rugged Holster in Prescott Arizona. Look uo their Chesty Puller harness system. Happy trails.

After looking at the chest holsters out there I believe I'll just make my own harness out of nylon strapping.

I have several holsters that will work with it and can be done for under 15 dollars of material. Less if your willing to scrounge.
