"Most Daring"

Highway Patrol pulls over an SUV. Standard road stop, and "How much have you had to drink tonight sir?"

"Plenty."

"Plenty?"

And the driver sticks a large semi-auto out the window, point blank on the Trooper and pulls the trigger. Misfire.

Second try and the gun fired, but the Trooper was out of the way by then. He moved to the rear of the vehicle and shot out the rear window.

Then he emptied the Glock into the driver's compartment. I counted at least 15 shots.

The SUV drove away at a high rate of speed, crossed the street, over the curb, and into a light pole. Small explosion, which was the air-bag going off.

Driver was dead at the scene.

Good to see the perp actually get shot and stopped for a change instead of watching the police empty their guns and not hit anything.

No I don't have mixed emotions. You shoot at me and you've signed your Death Warrant.

About four shots into the volley I was wondering when he was going to cease fire. Then I realized the "threat" was still moving, getting ready to drive away.

Head shot eh? I didn't get that report on the TV show.

Yeah, let's get the belligerent drunks off the highway. Probably an illegal alien anyway.

Drunk driver pulls gun on cop, and missfires. Cop ends up killing drunk driver in defence.

HAMILTON - A Ravalli County jury has ruled that a Hamilton police officer acted in self defense when he killed a suspect in a shootout.

Officer Ross Jessop pulled over Raymond "Thane" Davis in January for driving in the wrong lane.

The patrol car video shows Davis stopping and Jessop walking up to Davis' car window and beginning to talk with him. The after a brief conversation, Davis pulled out a revolver and started shooting at the Jessop, so Jessop shot back.

In January, Jessop started following Raymond "Thane" Davis from the bar when he saw Davis get behind the wheel. Jessop said he followed Davis because he knew he was drunk.

It took Davis several minutes to pull over and when he did, Jessop went up to Davis' car window and said he could smell the alcohol in his car.

"And so, I asked him how much he had to drink," Jessop said during Tuesday's coroner's inquest.

Jessop testified that Davis said he'd had plenty to drink.

"He was drinking at the time, not necessarily at the exact time obviously, but probably up to that time," Walter Kemp with the Montana State Crime Lab testified.

Jessop and Davis talked for a couple minutes and then Jessop saw a gun inches away from his face.

"The only thing I recall was that I know that I needed to move, and as I was moving, I heard the sound of a gunshot," Jessop said. "I didn't know if he was just trying to drive away far enough to come back and shoot again or create distance himself and then keep shooting at me. I had no idea."

Jessop testified that he fired 14 of the 15 rounds in his gun and that when back up arrived, officers ended up approaching Davis' SUV where they found him dead from a single gunshot wound.

Witnesses testified that before the shootout with police that night, Davis told people he wanted to shoot an officer. Davis was also a registered violent offender.

Raymond ‘Thane’ Davis

Posted: Tuesday, January 5, 2010 2:00 am | (11) Comments

HAMILTON – Raymond “Thane” Davis was born Sept. 17, 1973. He was given freedom from his earthly cares on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010.

Thane had a great love of the outdoors. Whether it was camping, hiking or fishing you could find him there enjoying Montana’s big sky country. One of his favorite places in the summer was jumping off the Corvallis Bridge and swimming in his beloved river.

His passion was hitching horse hair and Western arts. He loved old country music and Ford Mustangs; they were “his car.”

Thane was a big teddy bear who had a heart of gold. He would give anyone that was down and out a second chance. When Thane came back to the valley after a long absence, he found not everyone was as forgiving as he was. The last year of his life was filled with ups and downs. Immense joys and deep, deep sorrows. He is now happy forever in the loving arms of his Savior Jesus Christ, who he knew without a doubt, would always forgive him.

Thane is survived by his grandparents, Alfred and Mary Haws; mother Sue (Ken) Ireland; father Ray Davis; sisters Raylene (Chris) Wroble and Sherry Ireland; children Sasha Nott, Kasey Smith, Dylan Davis and Geena Petermann.

Thane will be truly missed by his friends and family.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton, with Pastor Jim Andrusky officiating. Private family urn placement will take place at a later date.

Condolences to those who believed in this guy. From where we sit in Arizona, it's pretty obvious "Big Hearted People don't go around trying to blow Cop's heads off.

We just had ANOTHER Mexican kill a Cop here in Phoenix, the Officer had a partner but the bad guy - a career criminal shot this young 29 year old Hero taking a husband and father of two away.

Of course there were those who were worried about the Police Dog bites the bad guy got when they caught him.

I have no sympathy for Raymond Thane Davis, sorry.

Where in the POST does it say you shall have 2 officers approach on a t-stop? Although the officer used questionable tactics, your statement is stupid, just like you buddy in the explorer.

no where did I say the officer was not justified.............

I simply am saying that it takes 2 to tango and if the cops thought for one moment that it was going be a chase or anythig the training calls for you to put a hand print on the back of the car....it shows he new who was in the car......just cuse someone wears a badge it dosen't mean they can't stalk you and wait for every chance to bust you......seen it done in missoula and the bitteroot..........the video does not show running thru a red light....and I'm not taking a cops word here where someone lost there life.......video for all cops and every interaction if you don't have video no prosecution cheaper than a taser and more reliable than officer testimony which well if I hafta explain it...........

same person that advocates orange license plates for DUI offenders...I think you must be nuts. I even agree with a few of your points here but you are coming off crazy.

How far does a man get pushed before he loses it and does something like this, it wasn't his first run in with these guys. Maybe he got tired of being run around all those years?

Watch the video...the cop enforced the law, and nearly died because he was doing his job. No cop 'expects' to get an assault on a peace officer, in fact every cop I know prays that they don't. I hope you never have to rely on one of the wonderful men and women in law enforcment to protect you, it makes me sick to think that they may have to some day.
Thank God that the officer is ok, by some miracle all is right in this situation.

Lets not sugar coat why he is dead. He tried to kill a police officer! Where was his "heart of gold" when he pulled that gun on the officer. If there was one person in this situation that deserved to die, the right one did! He died as the result of his stupid actions! Somebody lost a son, a brother, but a police officer goes home to his family.
