Once upon a time, true story.

My city was experiencing a steady increase yearly in the number of "Murders".

One year it was over 500 [around 535 if I remember correctly]. So there was going to be a BIG meeting, about it.

I did a little [ok a lot of] research before the meeting.
There were some high ranking "Public elected officials, and some High Ranking members from the Dept.

These "High Rankers" were upset about the number od "killings" and wantedto put the Unit I was in on a "Special Assighment" so the numbers would be lower next year..

Well the meeting reached a point where "they" wanted our opinion.

So I spoke up...
I stated, Well actually, I have looked at EVERY one of these Murders.

Truth is 487 of the people killed NEEDED KILLING. They were ALL Felons, killed by other Felons.

The rest were good people, some killed by Felons, many killed by a family member in the privacy of their home. You cannot prevent those "family" killings.

So actually, we have only had about 30 good people killed by bad people, this year...

You could have heard a feather drop.

Then I said, I can give details on EVERY murder, and you all can be the judge, of my analysis.
I then said, a bad person, kills a bad person, we usually arrest him and get a conviction. Consider it a twofer...
So actually the Dept is doing a Great Job.

There is nothing wrong with a LOT of people getting killed, as long as they are the RIGHT people.

Thats what I always said about bad guys killing bad guys. One goes in the grave the other goes to prison.

A win win for the good guys.

.450 No. 2:

The problem is that you inject some logic into the equation.

As long as they just kill each other, the only reason to even look into it is to put folks that might ultimately hurt decent folks in prison. The character of the supposed victim should be taken into account, at least in the punishment phase. But then, we won't keep them in prison anyway.

It's rather disheartening.

If you put the "bad guys" in jail and kept them there you would go a long way toward solving the problem. There's not much California has done right, in my opinion, but the three strikes rule is one of the exceptions. I've encountered a situtation in Texas where a perp had at least 8 felony convictions -- different incidents -- and at age 26 was walking the streets. What do you figure is the ultimate prognosis?

Well I am for the Death Penalty for ANY robbery, burglary, theft from person, stranger to stranger rape, murder [different from justifiable homicide], car jacking, car theft...

This no doubt would never be accepted, but maybe Mandatory Death Penalty for you 3rd violent felony conviction...

Why should we pay 40 to 60 thousand dollars a year per person, to keep these low lifes in prison???

The only problem with this scenario, is that you guys take 30 years +, to execute them. Ronald Smith, a former Canadian, cold bloodedly killed a couple of young Natives, in Montana, during the early 80s. He's finally exhausted his appeals and plans on applying for Clemency, later this year. Mad In China, they'd have taken him, behind the court house, right after the trial and put a bullet in his head. In Canada, he'd be eligible for parole, after 25 years. Big Grin

Logic will all ways loose to emotion, they report Murders here as well to many guns in private hands. Most Murders here are felons to begin with killing other felons in drug deals gone bad. Or rape/murder robbery/murder. Then there is family members that murder you can make all the laws you want you are not going to stop it. Human nature being what it is. Now, you can cut down on a lot of crime by simply keeping criminals in Jail. Those two home invaders that Murdered that lady and the two daughters a few years back were kept in jail rather than let out, well you know the drill. Then again when they were braking in a 12 ga Pump Shotgun would have settled the matter right quick. They both got convicted one is on death row and the other will follow. They had photo's of the whole mess on their cell phones. Still its going to take another 20 years to put them to sleep. And the State and the Current Gov. Are all in a knot about the prospect of it. Me I would just take them both, and put a wire noose around there necks and let them dangle for the duration. I don't get to make that call. Those two are going to cost the tax payers about 15 million before justice is served.
