So while there is a heated discussion going on re. the bullshit side of our heritage, I thought Id share a photo from the last week or so about some actual hunting.
Its been the fallow rut here, they went early this year, and in my area, they went ballistic. I spent 3 days chassing them whenever I could and had some really good stalks getting from 6-25 meters from 12 different deer. Always something wrong though, vegetation, wrong angle, moveing or really frustratingly a wind change just as I came to draw.
finally though I was In the right spot as this guy walked towards me oblivious to my presence.
At 3 paces I let him have it.

A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

Cheers guys. Yep it's a real thrill and i get a renewed personal sense of achievement with each animal I take with a longbow.
What type of bow do you have Bakes?

Gryph. Might have to be a sambar one day. Now that would be a whole other challenge.

Funny you say that mate, only last night one of my daughters drove up to my home for a birthday gift surprise and she wanted to see live deer.
I drove her around last night in the rain and we saw 19,one a stag of 28" that was ten metres from the old ute.I looked at him and thought "geez even a bowhunter could roll him he`s that close"

But that wont happen..daylight yes.But then you be lucky to see one!

Very cool! Time and patience is the key. get out enough and put yourself in their country and eventually one will make a mistake.

Shanks, that's one of the biggest fallows I've seen, and from touching distance too. Those shots are real thrills! Had a muley buck and bull elk almost that close, got 'em both. Just have to be ready is all and don't screw things up too of course.

Good luck on the sambar.

You know me mate..I even made up a rough timber stand in heavy big berry bush and swamp country that you simply cant see through or over...sat in that one evening with the late season mozzies with my scone approx 16' off the ground...that was enough,I prefer the foot method and haven't been back to it since.
All in all it doesn't really matter if I barrel one or not, just being out there is reward enough.
I rode the bike into another part of the place this morning and found evidence of another two separate stags that have come in for the just shooting clover.
The bush here is a tough job for stalking with a heavy understory, not impossible but tough. I have a few spots for your long bow in mind.

Georgeld, yeah. there is that moment when you are watching it happen, almost detached, and you can not believe you haven't been seen... the point where you can clearly see their eye. and then that point right before you release when you know you have him. its a great feeling for sure.

Gryph, just keep sending me those pics. They are the added bonus of just being out there.

Well done shanks, and with a real bow, too. Despite the primitive-weapons challenge, I sometimes wonder if there is something slightly dodgy about hunting with compound bows and bolt-action, muzzle-loading rifles.

Hahaha. Thats for sure another Shit fight waiting to Happen Paul.

I think it depends on where you live. In countrys that have specialist seasons for archery or black powder. I can totally understand "tooling up" so that you can be hunting even if say its not your preferred method.
Here in Nz we can hunt all year and anything. If you choose black powder or archery, its because you are looking for the increased challenge. It then, to me seems a bit off if you go decrease that challenge everyway you can. In Nz I think the line gets crossed when an archer uses a rangefinder to negate the need to get within a distance that they can comforably tell the range or shoot without having to know the exact range.I have no problem with compounds for sure.
A scope on a blackpowder rifle would be the same I think. though thats not something I have ever seen over here.
Again, its the difference in circumstance between countries that changes the ethic for me.If you have a blackpowder season, and you are allowed to use a scope, then if you wish to go hunting I see no reason why you wouldn't.
