We decided so see if it was as much fun as we thought.

And I got a better score than son. Now, I haven't been able to beat him at Field and Game for years. It was the 25 yard .22 rimfire event.

Good fun.

Next weekend is an event with .38's. I think we will join.

I know its sad when you have to answer your own posting. But its getting away from being pink---ish.

Our local dealers are talking $400 to $500 for a 38 Special that will be suitable for pistol comps.

I still haven't become completely with it in what we need for the centre fire pistol shoot coming up. We'II learn. But any advise about makes and models?

Where should I look here in Victoria (NSW, SA) and for what features with the pistol? Which dealers are the most knowledgeable?

I'd like to get a .357 mag so I can shoot the events with .38 rounds then ........

It would be very illegal to be chasing foxes across a padock trying to nail them with an under/ over then lean out the window with a handgun and hit them. So I wouldn't do it.

Its illegal. John Howard's laws are to be obeyed.

I shot UIT matches for many years and while I enjoyed them for the content & self dissipline required to shoot well (10yrs in the State Team)
Cowboy Action came along and gave me the chancw to combine pistol, rifle & shotgun in one match.

If buying a revolver stick with S&W.They are the Holden 6cyl of revolvers.Everyone works on them, parts are easy, hot up parts are easy/cheap etc.
If going to stick to lighter loads a K frame is OK...models 14,15(38's),19,66(.38/.357).

If going to stoke them up for rabbits er.. I mean longer shots,go for a L frame...models 586,686(both,.38/.357).

Also for a handier size maybe a 4" barrel,6" get a bit unwieldy.

$400-$500 won't buy you much, unless you have stepped on a bargin.

S&W 686 s/steel,6"-$750.

HTH,anymore questions just ask.

Regards,Shaun.

I'd second the S&W you won't go wrong with one fwiw I just picked up a 6" 586 locally for $400 you could try giving Pete or Sally a ring at Irymple Gun Sales on 03 50247669 though I think they are a bit light on pistols at the moment

You could try Rob or Ian at the Adelaide gunshop, I've dealt with them over the years, good guys.

If you get a 6" 586 or 686 S&W, you will not go far wrong. You can use it for Service Pistol, Action Match, Bowling pin shoots and even IPSC has a class for revolvers.

Cheers, Dave.

The S&W 586 - 686 are superb revolvers, are very popular and so are easily located. I just bought a Ruger GP100 thats around 10 years old by the serial number, has had a trigger job and is in great nick for $475 AUD. There`s about $200 diff in the new price of the 686 and the GP100, the Smith has a nicer trigger out of the box, but that GP trigger is pretty damn good too. Basically it came down ( for me atleast ) to the cylinder release catch, being cak handed I find the Rugers button easier to use than the Smith latch. I happen to like the Ruger`s styling too. Anecdotally, I am reliabley informed that to break a GP100 you need to hoik it out the window of ya car at 100kph, and even then maybe...

The guy who asked us along to the pistol club has a S & W (stainless but don't know the model) that we have shot a bit with .38 reloads. And a few 357 factory loads. I like it as does my son. I am going to check out just what the local gun shops have here tonight then try a couple of other locals who have dealer's licences and get guns in as you require them. One guy can do good deals on rifles and shotguns and seems to get some cheap handguns for himself.
Makes you wish you had a dealer's licence! The cost per year is a bit dear or otherwise we would have got one. I mentioned it to the DFO and he thought we could save a fair bit on what we buy each year. The cost and the paperwork though.....

But anyway, the Smith seems good....

GBB, if you have`nt got a concealable firearms licence, you have plenty of time to choose a revolver old son Wink It`s taken me better than 9 months just to get into the position to buy the chuffing thing, which I have done, but I`m 3 or 4 or whatever the licencing branch decides weeks away from bringing the thing home.
The whole process is a real test of your resolve, good luck with it, eh.
