All,
I will be going to NZ soon on business. I have 2 weeks of vacation and cash to use as well.
Please recommend to me an outfit to hunt with. Here is what I prefer -

1. Want to hunt stag, fallow, tahr and chamois. I do not hunt "gold medal" this or "world record" that. I am after a fun experience and a nice trophy or two to take to the US.

2. Do not want a small enclosure stag. Would hunt on a large ranch (15000 or more acres).

3. Want to minimize road travel going from place to place.

4. Would use a helicopter to access high mountain areas but definitely not for spotting or herding. I can climb, being from West Virginia, but not exceptionally steep terrain. I prefer to walk/climb but cannot navigate areas where technical climbing is needed.

5. I am in my 50's, will have my wife with me and want to have an enjoyable relaxing hunt.

6. Would like to see some of the countryside as well.

7. Would be open to sambar and rusa on the north island if it can be worked in.

Who do you recommend and why?

Outfitters responses most welcome too.

Hey mate

we work with some of the largest landowners and outfitters in New Zealand and they provide us with A+++ hunts, that I oversee. Red stag has a great many choices of locations and hunting situation, depending on what you want - either free range or some large well managed game parks. Tahr is that private land is more expensive that the public land hunts, to be sure, but some places you can drive vehicle tracks quite high up or get a ride to the top - guaranteed, no funny business!! All of this hunting is in the one (general) location.

You wont find a ranch of 15,000 ac or more in NZ - more like 4000-7000 for some of the places we are hunting... but that is hillside.

Gerald Telford - who posts here of course, is worth checking-out too (highlander), he has an excellent reputation.

Lots more to say but best done in PM or email rather than rambling a sales pitch on here. If you are interested to find out more shoot me an email at office@huntaust.com.au or PM

Cheers for now
Matt Graham

We hunted with Telford Fishing and Hunting Services this past spring and everything was first class and he sounds right up your alley for what you are looking for.

Here's a report from that hunt

I guess how soon is soon? It's summer here and most of the deer are still growing velvet. Chamois and tahr are available but not with their nicer winter coats.

Cheers,
Mark.
