Can someone clarify their experience carrying ammo on Quantas as I read it no prior approval required? Only if travelling throgh Singapore and South Africa. Also it states if ammo in locked gun case must be in separate locked case inside gun case? Thanks for the info.... White Mountains Arizona

I just went through the process with Quantas. You will need to notify them by email and they will send you an email back with an approval and a permit number. I believe the email address is dg@qantas.com.au I was trying to use dg@quantas.com.au and it kept getting rejected by my friend in Cairns did it for me and said that the proper address dropped the "u" in Quantas. Had my approval in 24 hours. They will want your full name email address and you Australian firearms license and permit number. Guns and hunting

OK thanks. How did you physically carry ammo in luggage? White Mountains Arizona

It will need to be packaged, not loose rounds, in a locked hardsided box. I use one of the pelican ammo boxes and use TSA padlocks. It will go in your luggage (checked in) separate from your gun case. Guns and hunting

Not if you put it in with your clothing in a suitcase. That' what I meant by putting it in your luggage. Guns and hunting

I just went to Africa and they lost my duffle bag with ammo. Much rather have it in gun case like going to Alaska at least you have both if you get one White Mountains Arizona

A simple request for a permit to carry no more than 5kg of ammunition in lockable case with Qantas dangerous goods department

Yep found that one by accident. A stickie post with all the requirements for firearms travel in Australia would be good there is a lot of bureaucracy down under! White Mountains Arizona

As stated above, a email for Dangerous Goods Carriage to Qantas will result in a return email with the proper form. I packed my ammunition in a small plastic ammo box, secured using a tsa lock. It went into my TuffPack with the rifle. No problems doing that from the airline. Your mileage may vary...

Ah, the vagaries of carrying stuff like this on planes. I recall 40 years ago I had to carry ammo in a wooden box (supposedly to insulate it from lightning strikes?). Ten years ago, it had to go in a locked metal box. Since then I've just had to have it in its factory cardboard, in with the stowed luggage, of course. I seem to recall that Qantas issued a licence to carry guns and ammo, which was good for a year. I guess James Bond types would need something like that.

Per quantas it must be packed seaparate. Although they further state if in rifles case must be in locked box. My ammo box won't fit in my guncase taking 80 rounds so hopefully it will all arrive. White Mountains Arizona
