Had a quick overnight hunt on Sunday to an area of Conservation land that I havent hunted for several years. The weather was crap and very windy but decided I needed to get out anyway. Before setting up camp I dropped the pack and headed off to have a poke around some small grassy clearings. The bush was very dry and I wasnt too hopeful, I had trouble finding the clearing and as I approached it two fallow hinds bounded off- bugger. Had a feed and went out for an evening hunt, the wind got stronger so I went low into the creeks to hunt the grassy strips. I had been glassing a very short time when I saw a hind ghost into the high tussock grass, I stalked around but never saw her again, after a while I set up in a spot where I had a good view. Saw a few nice feed areas so got the rangefinder out and ranged them for future reference. Got the bino's out and soon spotted a head sticking out feeding on the bushedge, soon the fallow spiker fed out and I got him with one clean shot at 284 yards. I boned out the good meat and headed off back towards camp, an hour later the light was fading, I saw a black blob in the tussock which was obviously a deer, I hit the deck and lined up on the deer which was a fallow stag with velvet growing. Decided not to shoot him as I already had enough meat. Next morning I walked out as the weather was even worse, come walking around a corner on the track straight into a Fallow spiker feeding on trackside grass, I dont know who got the biggest shock- he must have I guess as he legged it real quick with another deer that I didnt initially see behind him. ![]()

Good on you mate . Fallow are very pretty deer , and very tasty with it . I have to wonder if we wouldnt be better to shoot the does out of a herd so that we can get some improvement in the buck heads for trophy purposes . A national programme to improve the fallow trophies would help in lots of areas - our local heads arent that great cos most young ones get harvested before they reach maturity . ________________________ Old enough to know better

I normally shoot the odd doe but wont do it when they are heavily in fawn or are raising young ones. I let the most mature buck go as I already had this fella.
