Seems like about 900 birds altogether - this could be serious. Your fried (not mine) Laurie Levy is quite unhappy.

The Age

Several hundred birds, including rare and protected species, were shot at a property on the opening weekend of the duck-hunting season.

So far, 760 game ducks and 155 non-game birds have been retrieved from a private property near Boort, in Victoria's north-west, after the March 16-17 weekend.

The non-game birds include the protected freckled duck (pictured), coot and Australian grebe.

The state's Agriculture Minister Peter Walsh said the property was closed to shooters last week and would remain so until the end of the season.

Mr Walsh said it was a serious offence to shoot protected birds or to shoot more than the daily bag limit of 10 ducks.

Coalition Against Duck Shooting campaign director Laurie Levy laid out some of the dead birds on the front steps of Premier Denis Napthine's office on Monday.

''To be slaughtered like that is a terrible, shocking waste of our endangered species,'' he said.

Mr Levy noted that given the premier was a former vet, he should have some compassion and make this the last duck-shooting season in Victoria.

Mr Levy said the investigation into the shooting had been inadequate, a claim Mr Walsh strongly denied.

''Any suggestion that this matter is not being investigated appropriately is without foundation and rejected,'' he said.

Dr Napthine was in Geelong while the protest occurred.

I note it doesnt say how or by whom the birds were "retrieved". I imagine there was a fair bit of trespassing going on by the retrieval team , and would hope that some sort of action is pending over that.

But you have to ask - why were these birds left where greenies could access them in the first place. surely they should have been picked up by the shooters at the time ?

The thing that twists my mind is how "hunters" can mysteriously appear, fire a huge amount of ammo (enough to kill over 900 birds) and then disappear without any of the group talking. I mean 92.7% of the time the cops catch anyone it's because an accomplice talked and there'd have to be a BIG group to shoot 900 birds.

Couldn't be a toxic spill of some sort, I wonder ????

I don't know how it's done there but in Canada most bird hunters can identify birds on the wing. It's a bit of a taboo actually to not be able to.

I notice they didn’t identify the property owner either. But I seriously doubt that licensed true hunters would – 1st, have left the non-protected birds to spoil and 2nd, have shot the protected birds to begin with!

That said, this definitely sounds like something the radical antis would do solely to further their agenda ‘cause truly they – for the most part – care nothing for the animals or birds that they trying to push their beliefs and agenda upon.

I'm guessing it may have been poison of some sort, rather than shooting.

Wouldn't be the first time Greens have lied.

And as Jim says they actually care very little about the animals they pretend to love. Witness the PETA animal shelter that was basically euthanasing every animal that came through their doors.

It has come out this week that Laurie Levy has not worked in 30 years and has been living off the donations that go to his group CADS. So this idiot has been defruading the people who donate to his cause.
I am not suprised as most of his supporters are a pack of lying law breakers. I not not all that upset as the money donated is not going to its intended cause of stopping duck hunting. saving ducks is his fall back cause as the whale rescue centre he started flopped.

I was talking to a former DSE employee last week who had to see Laurie's annual duck dump.

He said they always stunk to high heaven.

I suspect that those haggard, recycled birds are the main reason the pollies treat it all (the CBD protests) as a bit of a joke.
