I have been a kiwi for almost 19 years and have shot a few deer over the years and even 5 nanny thar last year. I have shot heaps of feral goats, possums, wallabies and rabbits. But I had never got a chance to shoot a wild pig....until today.

I live in provincial NZ - the Naki. I have a few favourite spots for shooting goats. The odd cocky has been kind enough to let me on to his property & I have always been polite and well behaved on those farms. So I am always welcomed back.

I called old Rogers last night & said that I wanted to take my 11 year old boy for some goats and if I could go to the upper paddocks (which he had not let me on to before). He said sure thing. So off we went in the drizzle and the odd shower at 3.30 in the afternoon. My 15 year old daughter tagged along & so did a mate of my boy's.

We got to the farm & went up to the house to see if Gordon the manager was there. PIG screams the boys and I saw a 10 kg piglet in the paddock. I said it must be a farm pig & went up the drive. Met the guys daughter & told what we were here for & she said fine. When I mentioned the pig she said that it was definitely a wild pig that had come down in the rain & that I could shoot it.

Quickly I went down the drive with my Kimber 7mm08 & the pig was still there happily eating. One shot at 60 meters into the neck and he was down. The kids were thrilled and so was I. We took a few photos with my daughter's cell phone & quickly gutted the pig & put it in the truck. It started raining and so we called off the goat shoot! Back home I dressed out the pig and found that one shoulder was badly mangled with the exiting of the bullet. I have put the full piglet in the freezer and plan to do a full roast for Christmas!

Congradulations on your first pig Naki!

Hope this is the first of many! At 60 meters you should expect quite a bit of damage unless you are shooting a solid. I wish you and your family a fantastic Christmas and enjoy your piglet!

Pay no attention to the guy requesting pictures! He is a stir .

Too many times I have ventured afield not expecting anything and therefore have no camera and wind up with something fantastic. These days I rarely carry a camera.
