My daughter has been selected as a student ambassador for the People to People trip to Australia this summer.

While I'm not so much worried about getting her to "definitive care" while there, I'm more worried about getting her home if something should happen.

Who has the great/better presence in Australia - Med Jet, Global Rescue, someone else?

Thanks in advance,

Robert

Normal comprehensive top level travel insurance should cover this. Have a good look at your policy and make sure it covers immediate medical transfer to the US (if safe to do so and if required).

Australia has a first rate medical service. I lived in the US (East Bay Area) for 18 months, UK for three and traveled extensively in Africa. It is superior to all (except maybe the US as long as you have money or insurance).

In an emergency situation your daughter will be well cared for and would probably receive faster treatment here.

Med Jet and Global rescue are irrelevant in Australia and I have never heard of them operating here due to the comprehensive Govt organised retrieval services available. If they did, I'm sure they would only sub-contract to the existing networks in place at a cost to you.

No system is perfect, but if she was to suffer a debilitating event you would be better off to fly out here to visit her.

Thanks for the quick response...

While I'm sure of her care there, it's the getting her back here that I'm worried about.

Living in the greater Houston, Texas area, taking care of her here won't be a problem.

FYI
the Aussie network is OZevac
you will find them at Ozevac.com

They co-ordinate resources with all of the international networks & medical evac resources for evac both into & out of Oz.
everything from dedicated self supported services to additional medical care on commercial flights for less critical evacs.
domestic Oz accident & critical care evac networks are as good as anywhere in the world & better than most.........as is the hospital resources available.

As you say, your primary concern is evac ex Oz to international home after stabilisation in a worstcase scenario.
OZevac would be a primary contact in such a situation.

hope that puts your mind at ease

The energy industry transnational companies mostly use International SOS, FWIW. They have a considerable presence in Australia, too. http://www.internationalsos.com

But as Code4 says, a good travel insurance policy will cover all medical repatriation expenses.

A good travel insurance policy covering medical return to the USA if required.

And people are not turned away from hospital care here if no insurance nor asked for insurance papers by reception when immediate emergency care is required in Australia.

Australia is not the third world ...
