On packing for the tahr hunt this month, I'm finding it hard to get enough stuff into my 65-litre backpack. Weight is not the problem, just bulk.

What is the likelihood I'd be allowed to strap my tent/s to the tabs on top, secured with a wee padlock or two?

The pack is about 85cm high at the moment and the bigger tent would add about 20cm. I didn't see any problem while looking at the Air NZ website but have had hand-luggage disallowed before, even though it was nominally within the size limits.

Also, am I right in thinking the only batteries we can carry on the plane would have to be in a camera or such already?

Phone Air New Zealand and ask them what the go is. Then get them to email you that information , print it off and have a copy of it with you when you check in .

The check-in counter attendant wont know much that is outside the standard sizing so be prepared to speak to a supervisor - ask to speak with a supervisor if none are offered.

You should be ok with spare batteries in your pack. If not , we do sell batteries here as well ...

My experience with air NZ is that they are helpful but do not always know the rules.

Paul I would be more concerned with reducing all over weight more so...both the pack and you too...it`ll be tough, good luck!

what if you just got one of those big $5 stripey bags and drop both bags into it to consiolidate. You can sometimes even buy them at the checkin counter. Then when you get to NZ pull your bags out and roll the extra bad up.

it's been a bit busy here and I have not managed to contact Air NZ yet.

I should have bought a 75-litre pack like yours, John. Weight doesn't seem to be the issue and, since the chopper should have plenty of room, it seems OK there, too. So, since we intend to camp where it puts us down, we might as well try to be comfortable.

I was thinking of reversing the rain cover over the pack, to protect the waistband as much as anything else. My wife suggests I get the whole thing bound up in plastic but that probably costs more than Matt's stripy bag, if done both ways.
