Heaps of .303 still in use over here. Quite a few ex-military 6.5x55 turn up second-hand. I suspect .308 and .270 would be near the top of the list, perhaps .243 as well. Bruce

The caliber most used? .22LR. For hunting? Depends on where you live and/or hunt. Anything from .22 Hornet, up to 375H&H or bigger. At a guess, I'd say .223 Rem would be the biggest seller for most of OZ, but in places where we can get deer, maybe the 30-06? Hard to say, without access to firearms registry data. Why not ask Gun Control Australia? They seem to know everything. Cheers, Dave. Non Illegitium Carborundum Cheers, Dave. Aut Inveniam Viam aut Faciam.

Yep, I always wanted one of those 'deadly, 400m range, fully automatic shotguns' that Gun Control Australia, and Laurie Levy were always on about. "Don't try to confuse us with your facts! i have worked in the firearms industry in both NSW and Victoria and would think that .223 and .308 are the most popular overall but .243, .270, 30/06, not to far behind.

The .22 rimfire and 12 gauge shotguns are by far without doubt the most common firearms. The .222 used to be the most common owned centrefire calibre in Australia, at least until the mid-1980's. Not opinion, but statistics. Other than that, a lot of the others are mentioned above. The .375 H&H Mag would be the most common big bore cartridge but not relevant in total numbers.
