I'm thinking of renting a House on the North Island for about 4 months next summer/fall. I want to use it as a base to explore and fish. Any recommendations on which town to be near?

I've been to Bay of Islands and Taupo and liked both places a lot.

Seafish or lake/river fish ?

Taupo/Turangi is central , has great trout fishing , but is as far from the ocean as you can get .....

Do you want to live in a town or city or rural?
If you want to live in a rural location you might be able to rent shearers quarters on a farm - easier than short term rent for a house in town.

Need some more info from you before any definate suggestions .....

If Trout fishing Taupo would be a good choice lots of hunting around Taupo too. Not much hunting up the bay of islands way,few goats and pigs no deer.

Yep that's about right. Bring lots of money I'll help you spend it.
