My paternal grandfather fought at Gallipoli for six weeks as part of the Infantry re-inforcements in May(?) 1915 subsequent to the initial landings. He was eventually evacuated with enteric fever (Typhoid) and basically woke up in Alexandria Hospital in Egypt. He described how his main diet for that six weeks consisted of Turnips supplemenmted with tinned food as described in that article. The trenches were constantly being re-dug and filled in, so mapping them would be very difficult unless you could date them within weeks even days of each other. He had nothing but respect for the Turks who the Aussies all realised were defending their homeland. He favourite weapon was a trenching cudgel (A short thick piece of wood studed with nails and metal fragments) used in trench raids. If you had ever met the man you would realise why he liked it.....

I wonder sometimes whether the current generation fully understands. I don't think so. Not surprising perhaps, given the time that has elapsed. That kind of sacrifice has not been made recently and so people forget. Fortunately, we have not. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;
