Hello Im a young guy from Germany and I will go to NZ in december for a few weeks. I would like to fish there especially saltwaterfishing and maybe hunt there. The problem is to find information about that. I hope that I can get some information here. I need general information about fishing season etc.and information about good places. My main question about hunting is about the huntingoportunities in NZ. I havent got a german hunting license and wont have it when I travel there. Is it posible to get a gun from an outfiter in NZ? I hpoe you can answer some of my questions. Thanks I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, to discover that I had not lived.

Yes you will not have a problem hunting with a guide. He can let you use the rifle when the shot presents it self. December is not an ideal time for hunting Deer but you can have hunts at a good price for Chamois {Gams}, Boar and wild Goat. Send me an email if you need some more information. Which part of Germany are you from? ozhunter

Hello (from Southern NZ) A licence is not necessary to saltwater fish in NZ and there is no "closed" season for either saltwater fish or game. There is a closed season for some freshwater fish (Trout - roughly May - August). I am not a fisherman though I do have a sail boat and sail around Stewart Island. There is no closed hunting season, and again, you do not require a licence. The main requirement is to obtain a Visitors firearms licence. This is readily given if you have a firearms licence for your own country. If you don't wish to hunt with a guide you can readily obtain a permit to hunt on NZ's public lands, which are huge (much of the South Island mountain lands are public). If you are young, fit and have plenty of time to learn then hunting without a guide is possible as long as you really take some time to get local advice. You should not expect to readily obtain a trophy this way. In past years I have assisted several young european hunters, some have got animals, some have not. We still love to host visiting hunters, although I am not out hunting enough myself to be an effective guide. If short on time, not familiar with mountains and just want to Hunt, then hiring a guide is a very good idea, and will maximise your chances. Most guides can practically guarantee you will shoot an animal, even if it is not a real trophy. Feel free to "private message" me if you will be visiting Southern NZ, and/or would like further information. Cheers - Foster see www.southlandnz.com
