Hear hear, BAW.

What I shoot, I eat...99% of the time!

I'm not a big bloke, and I don't shoot Buff-sized critters...

If I was forced to have only one rifle for everything I shoot, or am likely to, in Australia, I'd have to compromise and select the modern version of the 7x57...the 7/08.

The 264Win Mag had quite a following in the late '70's. It really is a good cartridge, light recoil with 100gn projectiles for rabbits, smaller deer and 160gn projectiles for larger animals. Not legal for sambar in Victoria but should be,

Matching bullet performance to the cartridge should not be overlooked, a Hornady RN in say a 300RUM or WSM at 4-500fps faster may actually not penetrate as well as in a 30.06 at moderate speed.

Spot on BAW

I did some trials in the early 80's with my 300 win mag and a mates 308, alot of the time the 308 would out penetrate the 300 mag when the same bullets were used in each.

What species of deer are you hunting ?

With the 7mm-08 you dont have to bother with premium bullets if you dont want too.

I've had good success with the 150 grain Sierra game kings with 49 grains of 2209.

140 and 150 grain balistic tips also work well in front of 49 grains of 2209, but lately i've been using Hornady SST's(cheaper than balistic tips)139, 154 and 162 grainers all shoot well.

If I was going after reds though, i'de probably use the 162 SST with 47 grains of 2209 or 46 grains of W760.

Any of those bullets will work well in the 7mm-08 and probably a heap more will to, just pick one that shoots well in your rifle and go get your deer.

...or for Reds in the Brisbane Valley, I'm told, but also should be.
6.5 should be legal for deer anywhere, IMO...if that were the case, I'd change my choice from the 7/08 to the .260... dancing

I'm just a Yank from Oregon but was surprised that only one fella mentioned the .303. What distances are you guys shooting at?

The 303 has killed more deer than any other rifle in nz. The cullers could kill 1000deer a year each with a 303 and 1.5 bullets per deer shooting 400-600m and the occasional long shot out to 800/900m. shooting 80 deer a day was common with the 303.
