Got back from buffalo/banteng hunting with Brenton Hurt on Thursday. What a wonderful time! Great accomodations, etc.,etc. I would recommend Territory Buffalo Safaris to anyone!

I passed on a big bull the first day and watching the video concluded that I'd made a mistake. We went looking for it the next day and thought we found it. It left its cows in the trees and was crossing a grassy flat going to water. We circled around to get the wind right and heard it in the water about 75 yards in thick grass and trees. As we approached, it came out and spotted our movement. We crouched in the three foot high grass and it stared in our direction for over 5 minutes before it moved. It then would take a few steps, stop and then look in our direction. He continued this as he circled us, getting closer with each step. Quartering toward us at 19 steps the bull was clear enough for a good shot and Brenton told me to shoot. The .338 sent a 250 gr. Nosler through his heart and lodged behind the last rib just under the skin. At the shot, the bull spun around and ran back to where he came from. I put another Nosler high behind the shoulder that broke the tops of ribs and affected the spine. He dropped and slid in the grass 30 steps from us.
This was a different bull than we were looking for but the excitement of this hunt is priceless for me!
As for my first post about being concerned about .338 not being big enough? No worries!!!

How was the banteng hunt? I'm thinking of booking a hunt next year with Benton. Didn't have the time to hunt for them after my buffalo hunt.

Yes, please take up the space. My wife just heard about Scruffy's hunt in Aus. and says she'd like to do one like that. Please help me encourage this train of thought.

Congrats on the buff! I guess the .338 did the job just fine, but I'd leave it home and take my .411/.416Remington Magnum. Also, watched Ms. Garrison take a buff in a remote part of Oz. She looks better in shorts than all you blokes and can handle a .470 double quite well. Did you get any varmint i.e. camels, donkeys, etc. hunting done? Be nice to do both while over there. Damn! I'm so jealous. Frowner

You did, indeed tell me the .338 and its "candy" would work and it did just fine. I would post a picture of the heart with a hole in it but posting a picture is a pain in the arse for me.

The banteng hunt was very successful. My friend, Mike, actually did the hunting. I only hunted buff and was a non-hunter and videographer for banteng. We saw lots of bulls. More than I anticipated. Mike, in his excitement, missed 2 bulls before he finally connected. It took 3 .375's to put it down even though the first one was a fatal lung hit on the run.
The hunt itself is drive to the hunting area and then get out and walk, walk, walk ... I mean hunt, hunt, hunt. We got within 10 yards of a group of cows and small bull then slipped out without them knowing we were even around. I thought this was unusual as the banteng is supposed to be spooky. We also found a bull in its bed asleep. Brenton Hurt, our guide, did a fantastic job getting us in on them.
We found 2 bulls in a meadow feeding. A dingo was bugging one of the bulls. The dingo was trotting in a circle around it. The bull threw his head up and down and the dingo trotted away and layed down about 20 feet from the bull. Mike was stalking this bull when another bull, that was larger than the one he was after, came out from the trees and was bellowing and wanted to fight the other 2 bulls. One of the bulls trotted away a few yards and the bull then turned his attention on the one Mike was stalking and it disappeared into the trees. Mike then shot at and missed the big bull clean.
When we were looking for blood and tracks we came onto a very old buff bull, with an attitude, that fake charged us about 6-8 yards and then stopped. I ran for the nearest tree as I had no gun. Now that got my attention! The bull just stayed there as we deliberatly moved away.
We also saw wild ponies, wallaroos, wallabies, pigs and a croc. The camp was right on the coast. Beautiful sea shells all over the beach.
It was a wonderful experience!!! I highly recommend it.
