I was thinking of getting one of these for a "bush" gun, as a genral use type gun to take bush any time I go feral.I consider it a good 150m cartridge for roos and goats.
Any thoughts or feedback?
I was also considering the Norinco in that caliber too , but have never laid eyes on one to see.But they are cheap!
I dont really want to spend a lot on a bush gun , its main purpose is to take the wear and tear off my other better guns.

A friend of mine has a Ruger 77 in this calibre. Sweetest little rifle to shoot out to 200m. It also makes a good cast bullet shooter for general practice holding just enough powder to drive cast bullets at around 200fps. The Ruger has a .308 barrel and not .311 of the original calibre.

I was thinking that the Zastava should be a reasonable quality gun , too . Most of the ones(Zastava's) I've seen are CZ copies . I dug up some old cases from my brother, he has the Norinco and the cases have marks in them that look like they used a bad reamer, so I think I'll dodge the Norinco.I've seen the Zastavas go for around $485 au.
Is the dodgy cheap ammo still available??

Ammo will be the prob in au now.Cleavers may still have some.I know for a fact that norinco ammo has dried up,handloading is the way to go.
The reason that the Norinco rifle left marks in the cases is because the chamber may have small flutes in it.These flutes are designed to allow the rifle to keep firing with a dirty chamber. The green painted steel norinco cases get sticky when the barrel gets hot(paint melts).
The SVT semi-auto had a fluted chamber for this purpose, not much good for reloading I know.

Nothing wrong with Zastava(Yugo)they have been making Kar98k Mausers since WW2.The M48's are made in Yugo as well.
A lot of Mausers were refurbed by 'Prudenz 44'(Yugo)arsenal after WW2.
Zastava's have a claw extraction just like the famous M98.The 7.62x39 is a mini Mauser action.

Lets start a debate on claw V push.

Far Canel, I know the marks you speak of, but its not them. These marks are machining marks around the shoulder.Just sloppy machining ,thats all.
Is the PMC commercial bullets still around for the 7.62x39?
Dies and such are all available??
Are the Zastava's .308 or .311 boresize??

Lee makes dies and Winchester was making brass.
.311 150gns proj are still available because they are using them as a light load for .303.
PMC,I have no idea.
There was an article in Guns and Game a while back on the CZ,7.62x39.
The expert(Montgomery?) rebarreled one to 6mmPPC to shoot goats I think.

Update,dropped in on Cleaver's today.

PMC=$13.34

Might want to consider a Marlin lever in 30/30,similar balistics. They are available in S/S now.

Thanks mate. 30/30 looking better all the time.I wouldn't mind another 357 lever gun though, I've got all the dies and brass for them.I had to hand my old one in, it was just plain wore out!

While it is now only of academic interest, I'd like to pass comment on this common belief. Back in the good old days, before little Johnny Hitler (oops, freudian slip).... I meant Howard, took away our semi-autos I owned a number of H&Ks (9mm, .223 and .308) all of which had fluted chambers and everyone kept telling me that the fluted chamber ruined cases and was bad for reloading. However, I repeatedly reloaded all of my H&K fired cases and never had a problem. The only problem with the H&K rifles, from a reloading point of view, was that the ejection was so positive that it would fling the cases for 10 to 20 yards and that meant a lot of lost cases in the field ..... but other than that the fluted chamber was no problem at all!

Arent you boys allowed military semi autos? Golly , thats too bad , since we can still have them.... Actually its a bummer that you cant have them any more cos they are good fun as long as you can keep feeding them . The sks on goats in scrub is superb ...

Go on Muzza, enjoy your ribbing while you can .....

... but be warned .... if things get much worse on the gun legislation front here, in Oz, then there will be awful lot of Aussies moving to your neighbourhood and then you'll have to put up with us in person!
