My nephew got this one last week down in South Westland on a three day trip in to the Southern Alps. Choppered into the hut and knocked over this 14" trophy of a lifetime on the second day.
Only shot for trophies, he got two tahr and his brother a tahr and chamois. Saw plenty of others each day. Rifle is a Remington 7mm-08 with 140gr bullet.

He will get a winter cape and have a shoulder mount. I have seen the frozen head, it is a biggy.

Well done that man. Anything taken in that country is well earned.

Why do you say that , TP ?

If you hunt at this time of the year you can only get a summer coat , and a summer tahr is every bit a tahr as a winter one. Not everyone gets the opportunity to do a winter hunt , and this big boy is still a trophy of the guys hunt.

I think we get too hung up on winter hunts being the only real tahr hunt. Just my thoughts

I think we would all agree that it would have been a magnificent animal had it been in the winter coat but unfortunately we generally have to take trophies as we find them or find the time to hunt them. Better in this case that he took it rather than a helicopter gunship on a culling run. My nephew had just returned home for a holiday the week before from Sweden where he currently lives and works. A trophy of opportunity. tu2

Hi Matt
My damn computer is down at the moment getting fixed again, just uploaded this photo at my work computer, the only one I had sent through before the crash. There are some more really good ones with profile shots which I'll download from his memory card once back in business again and upload to this forum. I have not scored the head as yet but will do so sometime just to get a comparison with those already on the books. His brother, my oldest nephew lives a couple of 100 metres down the road so the trophy is real close.

Some of the scenic shots they took show just how close the animal was to the hut, within sight but not shooting distance and stunning country where they were as is always in most places of the Southern Alps. Brought back some memories for me so we are planning on returning in Winter.

I'm not saying he should not have shot in the summer,i just think it is a shame for the hunter.

Be good to see more photos when you time.
