Is a third party insurance mandatory for hunters when using firearms in New Zealand? (like over here in the Netherlands and in many other countries?) Is it possible to get such an insurance for foreighners in New Zealand? If so, could anyone direct me to an insurance company that deals with these kind of insurances? Thanks for your help!

Hello Reindeer There is no requirement that I am aware of. Some hunters carry a third party insurance called here an "public liablity insurance". Very occasionally a land owner will request this this is to protect all parties against posible forest fire claims. I wouldn't worry about it unless it is spaeciffically raised. NZ is NOT a place where you are likey to face litigation as a result of an accident or misfortune. I have never come across the cartridges you mention (have never even heard of them !!) but will ask at a local gunshop that I know imports some of the more unusual cartridges. Where abouts in NZ are you visiting ?? Cheers - Foster

Insurance is not compulsary here in NZ. I don't know if it is open to you, but all members of the New Zealand Dalker Steerers Ass, (sorry that should be Deer Stalkers Ass are automatically covered to the amount of $NZ5 million. Consider joining the Association, it costs about $NZ65 per annum. The deer stalkers are a non profit making organisation who represent shooting interest and lobby the government when ever our sport is threatend. They do a good job.

We will be staying with a relative of mine near Auckland. Hunting will be free range at the properties of some farmers he knows around the North Island
