Question: Can we import stocks from the US?
Unfortunately factory stocks just don't fit me.

I've found conflicting information and the AFP have given me not so reliable answers.

On the other hand, if anyone knows of a stock maker in the AU that has laminate stocks and will custom dye them I'm happy to keep my $ in country.

Thanks!

Sarah

It sounds harmless enough to me but, as you may have noticed on ebay, anything that can possibly be construed as having any military application becomes a bit iffy. I wasn't even able to get a US site to send me a two-quart GI water bottle (so I got it cheaper from England Smiler).

You can get a permit, of course, but when bidding on an auction that is not ideal. That said, people do get stuff like that without permits, innocently assuming there is no military connection. A website called International Checkout used to be willing to forward items the original site would not send abroad; they charged little extra and may still be operating.

Welcome to the site Sarah. Boyds used to send stocks to Australia if they were under $100 now however they have raised their prices so we can't get them ant more. They did tell me that they had an Aussie distributer so you could check out their site.

Thanks for the welcome! Sadly Boyd's doesn't sell a stock for my Sako .204 in the color I want. Frowner

Hopefully it's legal to stuff a blank in my suitcase...?

Yes it is legal but it may be subject to US export restrictions (need a permit). Boyds were sending directly because it was under the US$100 limit where a permit was needed.

What exactly are you going to put in your suitcase?

An actual rifle stock coming out of the USA would be a big no without a State Department export permit.

A piece of wood laminate big enough to make into a rifle stock for export would be a non-issue.

Under US$100 it doesnt need one. That is why it is different now with Boyds - cause their stocks have mostly gone up over $100.

And really though.... who is actually going to ask you for that export permit for checked baggage?

You can always apply for one though. Takes a few weeks to get back.

You might be surprised. A bag gets x-rayed at the airport, authorities are called to take a look at this "gun part" and suddenly you are being hauled off the plane. Yes, it happened to a buddy of mine returning to Canada. The Yanks, stupid as it is, take this stuff pretty seriously. Seeing as there is considerable screening of baggage these days I'd say the odds of getting caught are actually pretty high.
