BAW,

Met all of them, we called them the black gang becuase of their Queensland(black) shirts. I was in the tent with the guy that they named "General Cluster". Still have the 44Spec. BP loads left with me by "Black Bart". Great bunch of guys, typical Aussies, rough around the edges and full of sh%t . "Big Bad" took some digital pictures there, I though he was going to e-mail them.

Tell them all hello,

Hog Killer

PS I shot the game from '92 - '97 AKA - "San Jacinto Sam"

50-70 = one original 1859 carbine with the Springfield converson.

I see that Rooster is using his custom molded earplugs that I made for him at EOT, glad to see that.

Colts & USFA's here cost $AU2500-3000 while the Ruger's are $AU980. Some traditional shooters have Uberti Cattleman's in various 44/40 & 45LC. Everyone agrees the Rugers are easier to service and take more punishment than any of the Italian clones.
The gent on the left (Bones)has a pair of Piettre 44 cal. Remington cap & ball revolvers.
While I use 44/40's they are not popular however the tapered chamber of 38/40 & 44/40 tend to load like a funnel in those stages where you have to insert another round.

Rugers are the only way to go.Coil springs throughout, built like a Chevy.Just as cheap to keep running.

BA's shoulder holster can just be seen.

Nothing wrong with 44/40,it's a fine caliber with a huge following.

Rugers in S/S would be better if you plan on loading black powder in the future. No rust and easier to clean.Ruger's CC looks great but is prone to wearing off after a short period of time, not quite as durable as good CC seen on Colts.

The 44/40 can be loaded quite hot in a strong guns like the Ruger.Remember it is a bottleneck, ala .357SIG,7.62Tokarov,etc

Loading down to mild loads is also no prob.

The 44/40 is liked when loaded with blackpowder because the case shoulder seals in the chamber helping to eliminate blowby. The only downside is the chambers have to be kept cleaner than a straight walled case,so the case can be fully seated.Handloading 44/40 takes a little more care, making sure the shoulders are set back correctly to allow correct chambering.

Rooster is a big fan of the 44/40.He took out '49ers class last week-end,finishing 3rd overall.

Cisco used his Winchester '92 and two Rugers in 44/40 to take out Frontier Cartridge(black powder cartridge)

He told me he has a original '73 just back from the gunsmith(new barrel, tight headspace) that shoots 2"@100yds in 44/40.

With 9x21,9x23,.38Super,38Clarks,.357SIG,38/40,.357Maximum,.38Bain and Davis,7.62Tokarov etc etc.

Not forgetting rifles. A 30/30 will go straight through a level 111A vest.

I feel much safer now.

I've never been a 45 fan for no particular reason. It is by far the most popular caliber here in Peacemakers. I always prefered the 44-40 because they are so ballisticly close and yet the 44-40 is a true carry over from the old west. I just dont get the 357/38 thing for CAS although I like both calibers and have had several revolvers chambered that way in the past. Isn't the 44-40 a bit of a pup in BP equivelant loads ? I have a fantastic 1920's era Winchester '92 in 44-40. It came from AU and it's a real peach. I was wanting to keep my ammo the same plus the misses likes to shoot. She is not recoil sensative but does enjoy things that are fun to shoot Vs brutal. She carried a 15 oz Titanium Smith in 38 with plusP rounds for two years. That thing was brutal after after several rounds. What do you guys think on the caliber ? Am I going in the right direction ? I was thinking the 5.5" barrel but the shorter one is appealing as well. The Misses gave up her CCW this spring and sold off the revolvers and 45 autos. So I should mention that this will also see use as a nightstand home defense weapon. Do you guys all have the CC/blue or the SS Rugers. I prefer the CC but I haven't seen it on a Ruger yet in person. This week I plan to order or buy. Thanx for the help !!!

When considering calibres for handguns we, in the IPSC world, used to have a saying....

"God created 9mms and .38s so poofters wouldn't shoot 45s!"

Unfortunately, the biggest poofter in the country took our .45s away so I am not sure where that now leaves us!
