Does anyone know which shop this was what the story is with the gunshop employee?

A man who was shot when he threatened a gun shop worker with a machete has been sent to jail.

Ricky Beckham’s lawyer says his client was sentenced to two years and nine months’ jail in the High Court at Auckland on Friday.

The unemployed man had earlier admitted a charge of aggravated burglary after the incident in Penrose in July last year.

The man who allegedly shot Beckham, Greg Carvell, says he is disgusted with the sentence.

Mr Carvell is facing a firearms charge over the incident and is due to appear in court again later this month

SAI guns on Great South Road ( at least I think thats were they are )

Greg Carvell is the son of the owner , Ray Carvell.

All NZ gun owners are watching the outcome with great interest - I dont beleive the NZ Police want to charge the gunshop guy at all - the order has come from higher up the food chain.

Thanks Muzza I've been on that shop and was wondering if it was one I knew.

What a horrible situation for the family (of the gunshop owner's).

Gryph - the robber was spaced out on drugs and was reputedly after a gun to top himself.

Now the politically correct brigade will be howling for blood from the shop worker , and with the f**ked up judicial sytem we have they will probably get it too....

SAI Guns, see www.guns.co.nz for more info.

Greg co-owns the shop with his father. A couple of real gentlemen that wouldnt harm a fly. The robber was lucky it was those guys as others may have shot him in the head rather than just stopped him.

Greg hasnt been charged with Assault or Wounding with Intent or anything like that, just Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

In NZ it is illegal to have a firearm for self defense and guns are required to be secured at all times. As Greg was able to grab a 45 Colt and load and fire in a few moments Police are claiming it was held unlawfully and this is the basis of the charge. Ie that as the gun was available it was unlawful. this was in a gun shop!!!! They do sell guns in gun shops.

The judge who heard the case against the robber even said in his summing up that he was uncomfortable with the fact that the gunshop owner was facing charges and that the Police should never have brought the charges. Strong support!

The charges are political in my opinion as our left wing government is dead against any rights for law abiding citizens or self defense. ESPECIALLY if a poor crim gets hurt.

I 'spose NZ TV viewers can't wait for the special tear jerker interview with the crim on 'Holmes' ... (or whatever name the old has been is broadcasting under)

Seriously though, how sympathetic are the NZ media to the Carvills? I was surprised it wasn't the mob at Gun City in Chch when I first heard; they always seemed to be shooting at someone when I was growing up in Chch ...

Paul Holmes is now on Prime TV and hardly anyone bothers with him. what TV I have seen has been surprisingly neutral and even supportive. Ditto with the newspapers.

Actually the NZ public in general are right behind Greg Carvell.

People with no connection to guns are coming out in support of him.

There is a Trust Fund set up for Greg's defence, details are on the website I put up earlier.

Greg needs help and if anyone can assist it would be great. Even just email the shop through the website with messages of support.

Some of us think the charges may be dropped at the 11th hour.

The press quoted another gun shop owner who remained anonymous as saying in the same situation he would lock himself in his gun room and wait for the Police to arrive.

Thats wonderful! So if I am in his shop and an armed crim goes off he will run and hide and leave me and all his other customers and staff in the shop to fend for themselves?

I would rather be in Carvells shop where he had the balls to do what had to be done.

There was another shop employee in the shop at the time, that guy is elderly and no match for a younger guy with a machete. I also understand a customer was in the shop.

The shop is long and narrow and with only 1 mian door in the centre, there was nowhere to really run away and Greg and the other staff member were basically trapped. This is as far as I can tell from the news reports and knowing the shop. I wasnt there!
