'NSW Greens call for an immediate ban on prosthetic limbs' - MEDIA RELEASE 2 November 2011 Following revelations yesterday that a deadly hand gun and was smuggled into a Sydney Hospital NSW Greens leader and Firearms spokesperson David Shoebridge is calling for an immediate ban on prosthetic limbs. Later investigations by Greens gun expert and Federal Senator Lee Rhiannon, identified the gun to be a deadly AK-47 assault handgun with a silencer, the same type of weapon used in Port Arthur. "Artificial limbs are increasingly used by licensed shooters to secretly smuggle dangerous weapons guns into hospitals, schoolyards and other public places, to put people's lives in danger, Mr Shoebridge said. "There is no legitimate reason for ordinary citizens to have artificial limbs in their possession. "Disabled people can happily get around in wheelchairs without the need for these 'gun concealing devices' - there is simply no need for these evil thing in this day and age, especially in the city, he said. "In exceptional circumstances, there may be a need for artificial limbs but these situations are rare. "Where disabled people can show a 'genuine reason' for owning an artificial limb, they should undergo strict background and security checks by the Police. "Only then should people be issued with a licence to own or have artificial limbs in their possession, said Mr Shoebridge. "The Greens are calling on the government to publicly reject the Shooters Party legislation to allow law-abiding disabled persons to own artificial limbs and take real steps to get rid of artificial limbs in NSW once and for all," Mr Shoebridge said. Police yesterday charged a 66-year-old man who had been admitted to the hospital in Sydney's east for a second leg amputation brought on by a medical condition. A doctor reported seeing the gun in the patient's room on level nine of the hospital about 3.50pm yesterday, police said. No one was threatened with the weapon, but staff immediately locked the hospital down until police arrived and secured the gun. Officers found the gun hidden under a stocking in the man's prosthesis, police said. A police spokesman said the man's 18-year-old son and his 23-year-old girlfriend were in the room at the time and were allegedly found with two rounds of ammunition for the gun. The trio have been charged with a range of offences including possession of an unauthorised firearm and possessing ammunition without a licence. The gun drama comes on the same day that new figures were released showing a 60 per cent rise in gun theft in NSW in the past five years. The latest figures show that 592 guns were stolen in the state in 2008-09 - almost 40 per cent of the national total. This compares with 371 guns stolen in 2004-05.
