I'm interested on going on a water buffalo hunt & maybe scrub bull hunt. What is the best area? what is the going rate? Can you recomend a good outfitter? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks & Regards Mike

Here is a link to the Buffalo i went on last year with "Scruffy" AR memeber
https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5621043/m/563100715

I will most likely hunt with Glenn again,i wasn't very happy about the camp and food, but had a great time in the field.

Quite a few memebers here have hunted with Matt Graham,he does post here himself.

Gidday Mike,

I'm an Aussie that hunted with Matt and I had just great fun. Good company, good camp and food and remote buffalo hunting at it's best.
Never met Matt before the hunt, but now class him as a mate. Wink

Cheers,
Mark.

Check Benton Hurt out at http://www.territorybuffalosafaris.com/index.html# . I went with him last year. We saw at least 100 buffalo per day. No scrub bulls in our area.

Check out www.arafurawildernesslodge.com.au When are you planning on going? I‘m going when it dries out and cools down a bit. There's plenty of pigs where they are too as I lived up there for some time and did a fair bit of hunting.

Not really hiding i imagine as its only an email away and eventually a quote must surface unless they are hiding and dont want to commit to a firm price until they know what the opposition is reducing too,ask m graham he seems always happy to help fellas out with q`s regarding w buffalo.

But you are right in raising the q`s as i have often wondered why prices for the "upcoming season" etc aren`t listed for perusal as in the case with many of the US outfitters.I would imagine it also would help the fellas selling as far as having to deal with lots of "tyre kickers"

Mike Birdwell

I have hunted with both Matt Graham of Hunt Australia and Graham Williams of Australian Buffalo Hunters for water buffalo and scrub bull.

I have posted information about both hunts on this forum and the forums at NitroExpress.com. Do a search at both places and you will find more than enough information.

A lot of Aussie buffalo hunting outfitters websites are also listed here.

Prices can vary a lot depending on where you hunt eg station country may be cheaper but have less buffalo and smaller trophies, or parts of Arnhemland which are more remote but may have lots of buffalo and very big trophies. So you need to see what you want and can afford.

Scrub bulls may or may not be able to be found in the same country as water buffalo. Depends on where you are hunting. Same as pigs. A lot of buffalo country does not have a lot of pigs. There will be some. Some station country with few buffalo can be over-loaded with pigs. A separate hunt could be organised for pigs if these are particularly sought after.

So what does a quality Aussie buff hunt cost? I'm talking about good camp and good area type hunt. Thanks.

I don't know current 2007 prices but a good quality 1x1 Arnhemland 5 to 7 day water buffalo hunt is in the range of US$6500 to US$9000.

Numbers of prime buffalo in the area, expected trophy size, nice camps etc all can be factors of the price.

Someone will probably post their "mate" can deliver a hunt for $4500 sans the luxuries which is also true but the main factors in price are quality and quantity of buffalo trophies to choose from. Cull hunts can be had quite cheaply for those not worried about a big wall hanger.

On my first hunt with Hunt Australia I could have shot an old battle scarred bull near 100 points on the first morning. I took an excellent bull on the second afternoon. We were hunting 2x1 and the second client took his bull on day 4, just shy of 100 points (99 1/2 I think).

On my second hunt with Australian Buffalo hunters 2 of us, plus another American client took 5 good trophy bulls, 2 scrub bulls and a few pigs over a seven day period.

Lots of choices, places to hunt, price ranges to suit any budget or criteria.

Although this has been rehashed last year on this forum ... I hunted with Top Predator for buffalo and pig with Glenn Griffin in Arnhemland. The price was fantastic .. $1,700 2x1 for five days .. management bulls were about $900 .. cows were $300 ... big trophy bulls were $2,500. Pigs were $300. We saw only two pigs and both were great trophies and Top Predator whittled them down. There were a fair number of buffs around with the cows being much harder to approach than the bulls .. There were more than enough bulls .. including some really really big guys. We ended up with one trophy bull, two management bulls, and a cow .. The tent camp on the Gulf of Carpenteria was funky ... I'd rate it at about a 6/10 .... The food was .. by far .. the worse both in quality and quantities that I have ever experienced on any hunting trip .. and actually, it pains me to say - in my entire life .. and I am a grizzled varmint ... it wouldn't rate 1/10 ... I'm still not sure why it was so bad and the quantities were so small .. but by saving maybe a hundred dollars in vittles - the outfitter probably lost $20,000 in new and repeat business ... (This is based on a leopard hunt that I went on a few years ago and when I was done talking about it on AR .. 4 or 5 more safaris resulted from my gushing ...)

I can't speak for all outfitters but the (main) reason I dont put my prices on my website is that I prefer to 'present' our information and prices to each enquirer in a personal way. We offer some fifteen different hunts in three different countries and that information can be extremely confusing. It is much better if I can address each enquiry in a 'customised' manner and give my recommendation as to the best hunting area for their requirements.

If I was to just offer my prices on my website it would be easy for clients to just gather that info but not get the full 'picture' of what we are offering. If they collect all of this info from many outfitters they may never realise that they may not be comparing 'apples to apples' either, unless it is fully explained. If one was to be offering a single destination (such as a single estate or ranch style hunt) it would be much easier to present everything in a simple website.

I hope I have explained this sufficiently

Cheers for now
Matt
