Saw the wanker Steve Irwin on TV here in the States this morning. HE SAYS the camel is the biggest mammal in OZ. I would have thought the water buffs to be bigger than a camel.

What say you all?

Hi Ann,

A big bull camel can weigh as much as a big bull buffalo which is around 700kg (1540lb) but obviously the camel is taller so I guess that the wanker is 'sort-of' correct. However, I would think that the average camel is smaller (weight) than the average buffalo.

In any event, one should always be suspicious of anything Steve Irwin says!

Bob,

I figured water buff to be in the 2000 + pound range for a good mature bull. Our bloody bison can make 3000 pounds. I never pictured a camel to be that big, tallish but not really big.

I think my horse is a good 1650 pounds. Maybe more! But he is 18 hands tall.

Ann.I have shot,1000's Of both spieces Over 30yrs as a pro shooter.Admititley the last Water buff I shot was in the early 70's right at the end of the pet food industry. But camels have been a main stay of mine, when things go bad in the Kangaroo industry!(like at the presant time). So I think I can safley say .....Steve Irwin should be.Very quietly removed from society& put in a padded cell.
Or Prefrebly placed on a Island that is being used for nucleur testing!!!!!!!!!
There is no size comparison By hieght maybe but by volume weightand mass no way

I've actually done a LOT of research on the water buffalo of the world, before I made my first trip to OZ. According to the experts, the swamp buffalo of the NT have fit so well into the environment there that they are the largest of their species and the AVERAGE bull weighs 2200#'s or 1000kg's. They say the average cape buff bull is 1850#'s and the water buff are definately bigger bodied.

Absolutely correct.

And Urwin is also definitely the biggest wanker too.
