Read today Howard will likely lose his seat and be out to be replaced with some Left party. Does this mean an even more leftist ie ANTI guns and hunting regime will arise in Australia? A lot of guys here think getting rid of Mr Howard will be better for gun ownership and the country's economy. I think this country will be lucky if it stays in such good shape  . | |||

Prime Minister Rudd is a sometimes shooter himself; quite the opposite of Howard who openly stated, "I hate guns"! This election, we had our own Australian Shooters Party that in one state could only muster 34,000 votes out of 150,000 licenced shooters. That says a lot about the complacency of Aussie shooters!  Hold still varmint; while I plugs yer! If'n I miss, our band of 45/70 brothers, will fill yer full of lead! | |||

Yes BAW - shooter hereare complacent but I think under the circumstances the 34000 votes was a good result considering the huge ballot paper and the fact that the ASP candidates were not promoted much outside of the Internet. We are working toward future elections when we will be much more organised and hopefully get more support from the shooting publications. This was a very hastily organised campain... How often do we only hear a small part of Howards speech on 2GB in April 2002? He is what he said... in addition to the infamous "I hate guns" "We will find any means we can to further restrict them because I hate guns. I don’t think people should have guns unless they’re police or in the military or in the security industry. There is no earthly reason for people to have … ordinary citizens should not have weapons. It should be remembered that in the USA a number of prominent anti-gunners are actually hunters and shooters themselves. They want to continue themselves but don't see why the 'common man' should. I'll judge Rudd by his actions not by the promises he didn't even have the guts to make. | |||

Where do you think the Libs got the "uniform" gun laws from so quickly in '96? The previous government was just waiting for the right climate to introduce (enforce) them. Then, lo and behold, Bryant (who can't shoot as well as most contributors to this forum) supposedly goes nuts as a catalyst. Brace yourselves; conspiracy? It was good to see Howard wincing in dissappoinment on his morning walk the day after his defeat at the election ,now he knows what its like to lose something important to himself ,like thousands of law abiding gun owners did, at the so called gun buyback.Maybe Rudd might be more tolerant of law abiding gunowners, despite the Labour Partys history of Anti gun ownership by the peasants .Hopefully he will be a better PM than Hawke and Keating [which would not be hard ]who would both rate as the worst Prime Ministers this country has ever seen ,especially that F...in Hawke who stopped elephant products entering into Australia | |||

Dave, Banning Cracker Night, sprintcars having to have mufflers etc and etc and etc are all in the same family as gun laws. I think out fundamental problem is that unlike our American friends our population is not spread across the country. Between Newcastle and Melbourne we must have close to 50% of our population. In addition a large (very large ?) percentage of our population like the English and European way of doing things. Mike | |||

Definitely in terms of economic policy, foreign policy etc. Already Australia has ratified the BS Kyoto treaty. Also Rudd has said Australian troops will be out of Iraq by June. One of the first anti-gun moves of the new gov't, took only a couple of days, was to agree the historic ANZAC rifle range in Sydney is to be turned into a Nature Reserve. With no indication of funds to relocate the rifle range to date. | |||

John, To be fair to the new government, this has been on the cards and has been "on again - off again" for years. The way I understand it, the only reason that it hasn't happened before is because the Government had promised to find a replacement range for the shooters of Sydney before taking Malabar away from us. And the way I understand the present situation, the loss of Malabar still isn't certain as the land there is so badly polluted (by the WWII munitions factory that originally sat on the site) that it isn't really suitable for anything but a rifle range. To give you some idea of the extent of the problem - A year or so back, a trench was dug across part of the range for laying some drainage systems. The trench was only about a metre deep but when you walked up to the edge of the trench, the soil (from only about 20 cms down) was oily black and the chemical smell was very strong and replusive - since that time, I have always made sure that I have had a groundsheet to sit on or lay on when shooting on the range as god knows what nasty medical problems it could cause!!!
