Yo ! I am not sure if folks in Australia know this ... but the Conservative government in Canada, after promising in earlier political campaigns, has ended our hated and very expensive long gun registration. The law ending it passed the House of Commons a few days ago and now goes to the Senate .. (Also controlled by Conservatives) where it will soon become a done deal. The Conservatives have also promised to destroy all the records ... It is good to see common sense coming back to Canada on this front ... Just because some nasty Liberal government took away this freedom from us ... it wasn't forever ... I really hope that someday the same thing will happen in Australia. I love Australia ! tu2

Well scruffy, it was the more conservative party (calling themselves the Liberal Party) that took the auto rifles off us and introduced registration. Go figure ....

Nothing like a Nazi to stick it to the working mans recreational pursuits and the rural mans tools of trade.

Edit: The opposition here are called the Labour Party but may as well be called the 'latte sipping tree huggers' for all the good they do for the worker, so we're screwed both ways.

Congratulations to the Canadians. Well done.

Canadians rejected the registration notion right from the start, which made the system completely useless - hence its downfall could be achieved. Here in Australia we had too much compliance and now the registration is more-or less working (more in some states, less in others) - so there is very little chance it will be dismantled here.

Also the Canadian registry was a federal one... no? Ours are done by each state and territory.... 8 registries in all.... very hard to dismantle that now - 15 years later.... Frowner

sad but true.... BUT .... well done to the Canadians!!

Kudos to Canada! Canada seems to be going in the RIGHT direction while the rest of us are heading left.

Our system is federal, but that was the only way they could ram it through. If it had been left in the provincial domain we wouldn't have this mess to clean up, since many provinces fought the act in court.

In any case, it'll give us something to talk about in August.

Wasn't it a school shooting in Tasmania that got it started in Australia? Hard to beat outraged emotions even for conservatives.

No it wasn't out rage it was an excuse used by well funded small anti gun groups and media to push their gun ban agenda.

We have seen it use many times. When you have the media lieing in surpport of theantis its a hard fight put we are slowly win back some of the lost.

It is easier to get one state or territory to change the all at once.We started the CCW movement with FL around 1980.

Now we have 49 of 50 with lots of talk anbout IL getting CCW.

Fight and fight harder it can be done.

Well yes, you have to have an anti-gun group to push the agenda. But they are always looking for an event to move the agenda forward. Thus, a mass shooting is perfect and the public has emotional outrage to scare the politicions into submission. Strict gun-laws follow.
