Just picked up a 2004 Ruger catalogue and notice that the Vaquero 44/40 is no longer listed. I have 2 for western action and together with my 'as new' 92 Win 44/40 which holds 14 rounds gives plenty of firepower. From what I've seen on the firing line there are a steady stream of cowboy shooters using 44/40's (but not necessarily Rugers). I wonder what influence the handgun 38cal limit in Australia had in influencing this decision by Ruger, particularly when I saw so many shooters selling their 44's & 45's to buy 38 cal 'pussy' guns. I also have one of Rugers 45ACP/45Long Colt convertables and the Super Blackhawk with tapered 10.5" barrel both of which they also discontinued. My Ruger No.1 in 22PPC (discontinued after 1 year) is truly the most accurate factory rifle I have ever owned, shooting several sub .25"s in the 10years that I've owned it. Seems to be the trend today, if a firearms manufacturer can't sell a million items then they drop it.

BA- Hows life on the bottom of the planet ? ooops I forgot that's New Zeeland. I feel your pain old friend. Every year I look at the Marlin catalog and wonder when theese guys are going to get smart and start making some special edetion guns. I don't want much.....A 38-55 with a 24" octagon barrel, case colored receiver, Tang site, None of that mar shield crud but a real oil finished stock with a cresecent buttplate. I know they'd sell at least one !
