Yes,6mm Lee,a larger 6mm Experimental,7x57 and some 7.65. The G33/40 is worth a bundle on the market as is,IF you can find one.($1500 upwards)Were used my Mountain Troops(Gebirgsjager)for the light weight they offered. The '96 action should only be used for low pressure rounds like the 250 Savage,6.5x55,7x57 and .35Rem. I know a lot of Sweds are done in .308,the Swed being the exception being made of great steel some say the best. The Sweds specified their own steel over Mauser's steel in early production.Early production 1894 to 1901 was done at Mauser Works,I have two.(1899 and a 1900)

Was the 96 not chambered in more cal's than 6.5? G33/40 and VZ33 are small ring 98's with small ring threads, would one of these not fit the 96?

Trev, why not fit a s/h 8x57 barrel. Cheap ammo components, way more power than 30.30., minimal gunsmithing. With the red dot sight it would make awsome sambar gun and perfect for fixing up the big four footed ferals over there. Cheers

A Swedish '96 is a small ring action and was never chambered in 8mm. The 8mm was built on a '98 action, which is a large ring. The barrels will not interchange.HTH One option is to load the 6.5 with gaschecked lead projectiles. Redback Projectiles in Brisbane make them,I use them myself. Loaded back to 1800fps it shoots like a 30/30 and is cheaper to feed than jacketed ammo. My Swed still uses stripper clips for a fast reload and has no probs feeding 6.5 ammo.

the 30/30 cart. was chosen for its low pressure, good stopping power and cheap ammo( when I cant reload)., The rim fits and the empty case gets picked up from the follower into the claw OK( no barrel fitted yet.). I've had a hard time trying to find a 6.5 swede barrel so I thought a 30 cal would be the most common S/H barrel I might find. This meant looking for a low pressure , common, 30 cal which led me to the 30/30. The action has some minor rust pitting so its never going to be the prettiest, but while its sitting around it becons me to do something with it. The action has had the bolt turned down and has been drilled and tapped for scope mounts(MIA). What do you guys think I should do with it??

Find a s/hand 6.5 barrel, screw it in and shoot cast at low pressure or jacketed. There must be one s/hand barrel floating around in Oz. We have a gunshow here in Brissie early Nov.(6th?)if that helps."Mauser Harry" turns up with his junky Mauser spares, barrels and parts. Finding a small ring .30 cal barrel will be harder if not impossible seeing no '96 was ever made in .30 cal. Cheapest way out of it as far as I can see.HTH

for what its worth, I might just buy a S/H 6.5 and keep it for spares. Thats probably the most commonsense idea, I guess.

I have an m96 (ex 6.5) mauser action I was thinking of turning into a 30/30 bolt action. The rim of a 30/30 case fits into the bolt recess on this action. Here's my plan. Get hold of a s/h 30 cal barrel, get 'smith to chamber and thread barrel for action ( and set headspace) , keep military 2 stage trigger, get barrel cut at 22 inches, ex military stock, mount red dot sight , and use it as a close range quick, handy, scrub gun. Not after pretty, just practical. what are your thoughts??

Trev I don't think the magazine is going to feed so unless you want a single shot I would advise against a 30/30. you could make a 308 out of it without to many hassles and I can recomend an armourer in Adelaide who would do the job for not to much money. cheers Pete

I've already tried to feed a cartridge through the feed rails, It wont but wont take much metal removal to make this happen. I'm not really interested in 308. Part of the reason for 30/30 is 1/ the cheap ammo(non reloads), and2/ down the track I'd like to experiment with cast bullets. Its probably cheaper to just buy a 30/30 lever action anyway but I was curious about everyones input.

Don't waste your time or money on this oddball that will have no resale. 1.Get yourself a bolt action in 7.62x39,same balistics.Ammo would be cheaper still. 2.Get a stainless Marlin and never look back. You can still load the last round into the mag(first into chamber) with a spitzer or hand feed. My two bobs worth.

Trev, Stevens made such an animal and I have had 2 of them(one for parts). When I had a 96,I turned it into a fine shooting 308 but that option has already been looked at. One thing I discovered long time ago, if you don't indulge your curiosity, you will always wonder if you did the right thing. If you can afford it,what the heck, who are you hurting! It can always be changed again, Right! derf
