About 2 months ago, 3 gents, very nice guys, showed up at my place to have a little fun and as a token of their thanks, they left a bottle of Bundaberg Rum. Not to insult anyone, but was it a joke on me, is it paint thinner or cleaning solvent? What do you mix it with to make it palatable? Must be an acquired taste. Suggestions or help anyone? Thanks

I'll let a guy from down under chime in about the rum, but the Bundaberg Ginger Ale is fantastic! ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris

Sevens, is that a ginger ale mixed with the Bundaberg? or a separate drink? Don't want to waste it but need to figure out how to drink it.

Bundy and Coke is a popular drink. Shot of bundy in a glass of coke. If you want more bundy, add more shots ! Haven't drunk it with anything else but I am sure it can be. . Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

It can be used for either of those purposes.. It's also known as Queensland diesel...a lot people down here are fans, I'm not one of them. I much prefer rums from Jamaica.

Not the best rum but it goes well with coke. It is quite popular in some places and with certain crowds. A day spent in the bush is a day added to your life Hunt Australia - Website Hunt Australia - Facebook Hunt Australia - TV

As you know, it doesn't have to be a crowd Another option instead of Coke when it's warm is to have it with dry ginger ale and a splash of lime Cheers, Mark.

I suspect Bundaberg is the world's worst rum. To me it smells like Cooper's sheep dip, which I think contains a lot of arsenic. I once thought Bundy was the only justification for Coke but now realise it ruins that, too. Inner Circle used to be a good Australian rum but since it was brought back about 10 years ago, I've had doubts about it, too. Beenleigh is pale but OK but I now prefer foreign stuff: Captain Morgan OP, which is often sold at a good price in duty-free stores.

Bundy rum is CRAP. That certain crowd Mat is refering to is the bogan/B&S ball crowd who think the mark of a man is to drink gallons of the stuff, do circle work in their ute then throw up in their swag. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

That is one crowd I guess. It probably isnt as popular now as it was 10-15 years ago. In a (previously) popular and well known NSW pub that I used to work at, we turned 100 litres of Bundy into mixed drinks in one night, not to mention beer, wine and other spirits. Back then you could breast the bar and simply call for 'rum' but these days it seems you have to ask for 'rum and coke' to get the right result. Thanks Gents, Baz brought it and said it wasn't marketed out of Australia. Maybe he was just trying to get me to believe how tough you guys are. Or maybe he was trying to export it so they would run out of it! I'll try it with coke and if it's not drinkable that way I might have some paint that needs.............

Queensland fighting juice as Bakes said the bogan and Band S ball crowd really think it is rite of passage to drink the crap . I had to install it into postmix systems (syrup and rum already mixed)but it started to premiate through to the other flavours so it had to be run in completely sperate insolated pythons (bunch of tubes) so it became to expensive for most pubs. image what it does to your guts. It is great as a toilet cleaner, poor in and leave over night in the morning flush and you have a clean bowl

Mix it with the ginger beer for what we call a "Dark and Stormy". Drink too many and you will certainly feel that way. As others have said the most popular is Coke. Can be had with soda or flat water (dash of lime even). There are a number of versions of it these days that vary in quality from poison all the way up to bench cleaner. It is popular on ANZAC day mixed with milk at the dawn service. I must admit that I used to drink quite a bit of it but it always seemed to give me a nose bleed. As I have got older the complete inability to function the next day/s has become too much. If only I didn't think that the only way to get the taste out of my mouth was to drink more of it.

Some like prefer it with Diet Coke, and I have had it mixed with the Kiwi brew L&P. Al

You guys are too funny. I do know that drinking it straight up is not an option. Might try a bit of it on a stock that needs to be refinished. It will probably eat the finish off and make it easier. Haven't worked up the nerve to try it in coke yet. Tried a Ginger beer 2 years ago in Zim and to me, it is an acquired taste. I'll stick with Scotch.

It's a ginger ale made by Bundaberg. Sounds like their rum is not too popular, but their ginger beer is one of my favorites. ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris

Well you should always start drinking it the following way. For the first 2 drinks,1 part rum 4 parts coke. Then you go to a 50/50 mix. When the bottle is empty you know only good thinks can happen. Including the sightings of drop bears. It is also referred to as mothers milk.

Bundy & coke is fine Bundy & ginger beer is also good. You can add a spoon of honey to it if you wear a skirt. If you have real hair on your chest, Bundy & beer! But make sure you have some mates to keep an eye on you after the third one! "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

I have seen real rummies drink it straight and use beer for a chaser - but at least it was Victorian beer. "Chasing it with XXXX would be pointless exercise

My Oath blacks. There is only one Rum and Bundy is it's name It is comfortably the biggest selling rum in Australia and is not only drunk by people at B&S balls either . Probably more popular with country folk than inner city latte-drinking types. Don't know how I'd survive without it. It certainly makes me stronger, tougher and more intelligent when I drink it... and if I feed it to the wife it makes me more more sexually attractive too .

Bundaberg Rum. The worst rum I've ever tasted. What stunned me was how many variations of that crap they make. I don't consider anything an acquired taste if it takes more than four years to "acquire" it. I gave up and left the country. India has a better rum. Bundaberg Ginger Beer is another story. Love it. I agree with Australia protecting their industries because if Australians were able to sample what's available in other parts of the world, the local companies would go out of business. In Venezuela there is a second-rate rum called Aniversario. It sold for $7.00, or $14.00 in a leather pouch. I found a bottle in Perth, Australia. It was $149.00 a bottle. That is why Bundaberg is still in business. Another example of how the Australian government gooses the average Australian; Penfolds Grandfather, an Australian port, costs $100 in Australia, but if you pack it up, and ship it half way around the world, and put it in a Dallas, Texas liquor store it costs $60.00. I've been thinking about taking Penfolds Grandfather from Dallas back to Perth, and using the profit to buy Talijancich port in the Swan Valley. I believe it is the best port I've ever tasted. Australia is a great country, but artificially high wages and artificially high costs spell b-u-b-b-l-e. I wouldn't want to be there when it pops. (Later they can thank the labor government and the unions for their misery.) When the resource industries of Western Australia eventually go over the cliff for some reason, the rest of the country will soon follow. Booms are always nice... while they last.

It is wrong to assume that resources industry is based in WA - that is not the case at all. Huge resources in QLD, NT, NSW, even SA. Iron, coal, copper, bauxite, gold, uranium, diamonds, oil, natural gas.... the list goes on and on and on. With regard to Penfolds grandfather Port - the difference between here in Australia and in Texas would be taxes. I can buy it here for AUD$82 It isn't gooseing either - Australia has the strongest economy in the world. Money is pouring into the country. Australia is the only country that didn't go (technically) into a recession during the GFC. The AU$ is the fourth most traded currency in the world. Interest rates here are very, very high by world standards.... add that all up!! There is no emergency in the world where that bottle of rum would be good for. Do yourself a favor, go find the towns wino and give it to him.....but then run like a bastard because when he tastes it he will come after you. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. Kensco, I agree with you about Bundy, but you must beware of the dangers of imitative magic: just because something looks like a representation of something else does not mean there is is any real connection. Australia really is one of the more free-trade economies in the world now and that is one of its greatest dangers. By allowing mining to be the backbone of it, we are suffering Dutch disease in our manufacturing sector and are, if anyone dares say it since Keating, at risk of being a banana republic where iron ore and coal are our bananas. The high level of the Australian dollar at the moment, though, is more to do with rest of the world's faith in it because we have not sunk to quantitative easing like the US, Europe and Japan and still pay depositors interest for leaving their money in the bank. If Australian 'port' is cheaper in Texas than Australia, this is more likely be to do with Penfold marketing policy than even corrective alcohol taxes here. Bubbles occur here but never any better than the US sub-prime one that splattered the whole world recently. However, I will stand up for the right of workers to defend their own standard of living for as long as they can. Our children like to eat, too. The American situation where wages are kept down by unscrupulous employers taking unfair advantage of porous borders is not one I'd crow about.

Great to hear that. Being originally from India I have this nostalgia for the way things used to be.... Well, I just got back from 6 weeks in India and I was shocked at the beer which I used to love - it tasted crap. I was shocked at the local whiskey that I used to love & again it was undrinkable. Then I tried the rum and I was amazed at how good it was - as good as any Carribian or Aussie rum and better than most! "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Yes even NSW has some minerals ...
No actually has extremely high taxes on numerous products. We are ripped off blind by our socialist gov'ts for alcohol, tobacco, fuel, etc etc, the list is endless. The reason many products are far cheaper overseas, even after high export transport costs. The economy is basically ffffed, except for the mineral boom. Only minerals is driving the economy, manufacturing is in the doldrums, no one in agriculture is making any money, and our useless gov't is completely clueless about it. When the mineral boom bubble collapses this economy will be in deep trouble. The only sunshine will be exchange rate will drop to a sensible level allowing non-mineral exports to become competitive again. Re Bundaberg Rum, as a teenager at school I used to drink it straight, I think a bottle at the party just after finishing school ... far better taste buds now ...
