You have to remember that these "new" calibers are creations of the marketing division of the Gun makers. Just like the WSM's and the WSSM's and the Ultra Mags and all of those.

There hasnt been anything new in the actual gun industry for years so a new calibre will always have a rush of buyers wanting that "new and better" toy . Once again think WSSM and WSM...

I shall stick with my old .22 K-Hornet , or my .17 Mach 11 rimfire. I dont need to reinvent the wheel - but would be pleased to read your report on your new toy.

I think a lot of it muzz is that you can buy ammo for these things right off the shelf but you cant do that with lets say a 17 k-hornet.

with regard to the actual 17hornady - yes perhaps they could be reinventing the wheel in that regard (as far as its availability in bolt guns), as a 17 Rem would have done just the same thing... just not sell as much ammo.

Hornady has been very smart tying these (all these different) new cartridges and rifle manufacturing.

I dont think it is fair or correct to say there hasnt been anything new in the gun industry however. You mentioned ultramag - 375UM - what other gun can you buy factory ammunition for and get that kind of downrange performance - and not pay $10 a round (ie weatherby). Plenty of 'new' projectile choices come out as well. Sure there is plenty of marketing and hype but there are improvements in many fields. Powder is probably the best example... expanding choices, safety and performce. I could detail all sorts of actual advancements beyonjg just marketing hype...

I've always wanted a 17 Hornet, and the Hornady version looks damn fine to me.

If CZ offer it in the 527 American, my wallet is going to be feeling some pain.

Muzza, there's nothing new about a 17 Hornet, except with this one you'll be able to buy ammo off the shelf.

Ackley wildcatted the hornet back in the fifties. An Ackley hornet has a 30 degree shoulder, it appears Hornady's version is somewhat less than that.

I like the 17HMR, but they're dear little buggers to run.

All points noted guys - but there really isnt anything new in firearms development that hasnt been done before. Some things work better now with current powders and better steel but there hasnt been anything "new" in rifle development for years.

These cartridges - like the 17 rimfires , and the 204 etc - are created by the gun makers to entice you to buy more guns.

No new gun designs so lets make a new calibre...

I have my shooting needs covered with my battery as it stands at present so cost of ammo and ability to buy it off the shelf isnt an issue for me. But please - keep us informed.

I agree that the marketing departments jobs are to reinvent the wheel in order to sell some more firearms.vis a vis 375 Ruger and 416 Ruger.
However the 17HMR and 204 Ruger were new and have given us cartridges which make perfect rabbit rifles at short and intermediate ranges.
I shoot quite a volume of rabbits in NZ each year and own several rifles in each of the above calibers! They each do a job not previously catered for by factory ammunition.
Now when is a marketer going to launch a factory 20 BR?

Muzza wrote: ..."trajectory of 223"...

I gotta ask, what is so great about that?

APB has the situation nailed...The 17HMR is something that home reloaders probably couldn't have done because it is a rim fire cartridge and the .204 is fast becoming the replacement for the .220 Swift

Don't ask me what happened, when I left Viet Nam, we were winning.

I didnt write that Ron - the OP did .

I would be real keen to see one of these rifles in action , but like I said - I dont need one since I have most of the bases covered already.

All valid points though , from which ever side of the fence you are looking
