I'm currently using 41 gn of AR 2206 with 150 gr projectiles. Accuracy is excellent. I'm just about out of 2206 and am considering 2208 as a lot of shooters out at the range tend to like it. Opinions please.
thanks

AR2206 is 'the' powder for 308. It is marketed under many names but the burn rate was tailored for 7.62x51 military with 144FMJ.
41gn is a mild load and I use 43.5 with 144gn surplus in my K98 Isralie.
42.5gn with 168gn Matchkings is very accurate in my Omark.
You just can't get enough AR2208 in 308 without compressing and it is better suited to larger 30.06.

A slightly compressed load ,around 45-46gns is realy good with 155gn bullets. I think max load is about 47gns ,but this would be fairly hot in most guns. I use 2208 with 155 and 175g bullets.

That's my logic too. So why does every second joker at the range recommend 2208? I've noticed that the current guide lists 2208 as the preferred powder for the 150gn projectile.

Litigation would be my guess the current ADI book uses a lot of Hogdon data it would appear that even if you filled the case to the top with 2208 and stuck a 150gr bullet on it you won't blow yourself up!!
just my 2 cents

I Think because the first joker is using 2206 as a full bore shooter and recently an f-class shooter we try both for me 2206 works well in slower twist 1-13 but 2208 works really well in faster twist rate also 2208 has worked very well with heavier projectiles 175gn in milder climates a compressed load of 2208 is great. there was talk a while ago at a shoot meet about the most reliable powder batch to batch 2206 and bm1, bm2 and 2213sc were the most talked about powder but all agreed 2208 was tried if 1/2 inch groups were not reached with 2206.

Have used ar2208 for a while now in the 308win, find it a good preformer, especially with the 150gr. Settled for 44gr, shoots better than i can hold it still. Did try ar2206, but my rifle did not take to it. Win 748 was also a good choice with the 150gr, 47grs shot well. Stopped using this as it got too dear, especially when the fox bounty was on, go figure.

Robz,

This might be a bit late now, but I had the reverse problem. I have used 2206 with 150gr Sierras which shot OK. The best load was 43.5 grs which gave just <1" @ 100 yards for 3 shots. But I had been using 2208 because that's what people seem to be using. Best loads I got with 2208 were 43.5, 44, 44.5 grs all shot .75" @ 100 yards. I also got a good group (sub 1") with 46grs but this showed signs of high pressure (47 grs is max in ADI manual). Then used all my 2208 on my 375 Chatfield-Taylor the other week but didn't (inadvertently) replace it.

Then last Thursday started working up a load for an upcoming pig (boar) hunt with 150 gr Silvertips. Realised that I had no 2208, so I reverted to 2206. Tried a variety of loads but the 43.5 shot the best 1" @ 100 yds and 2" @ 200 yards (3 shots). So I was pretty pleased. You're right, the ADI manual doesn't give a load for 2206 for 150 grs projs but it does for 144 and 155 grs. So I extrapolated the difference. Maximum load for 155gr proj is 44grs and for 144 gr is 44.5 grs. So I figured that the 43.5 gr load would be giving me about 2,700 fps out of 22" barrel (Winchester pre 64 M70 fwt). But will Chronograph before I go. I'm happy with this and will use it for my upcoming hunt into the channel country in W. Queensland. Rifle is sighted 2" high @100 yds and 3" low at 200 yds.

I also noted that this powder was developed for the 7.62 military round.

I have loads for 150 gr proj with both 2206 and 2208 that shoot pretty well in my rifle, so I could use/recommend either.

Hope this helps,
Magnum
