Bufalo/Scrub bull gun?

My wife is from Cebu Philippines. It is possible, if I can find a cheap enough flight and hunt that I could go to Australia to hunt. I would like to hunt hogs(mainly) but also scrub bulls and buffalo. I don't have anything more powerful than a 30-06. I would prefer to use my own gun, not rent. Is a 9.3x63 enough gun to take the bovines? Thanks, capt david.
BTW, if you have any suggestions on where to hunt let me know. Again I am on somewhat of a budget and if The bovines are too expensive, I'll just hunt Pigs. capt david troll

"It's not how hard you hit 'em, it's where you hit 'em." The 30-06 will, with the right bullet, successfully take any game animal in North America up to 300yds. Get closer!

ps. I'd hunt them, carefully, with the 30-06 if that was all I had.

Myself and Scruffy(posts here) will be hunting buffalo with Glenn from Muckadilla safaris in 6 weeks time, ill post a report on my return.
I will be shooting 375H&H,i have talked to Glenn about calibers and bullets,he likes his clients to shoot 375 and up for buff, but as had guys use 338winmag with no problems.
This hunt is for cull cows and bulls and is a lot cheaper than any plains game hunts i have seen for Africa.

Tell Glenn he owes me a bottle of bourbon for putting scruffy onto him . lol
Let me know how it goes .

The last time I checked a SCRUB BULL is just a Bovine that has run a muck!

I have killed a lot of Bovines with a 22 cal 45gr bullet- but that was in the past- I would say that the 30-06 with most any gr bullet would knock down most any Bovine

GOOD LUCK ON THE HUNTS

Bolt Action, how many water buffalo have you shot? They can be killed with a .30-06, we have had several hunters do it, who couldn't shoot anything heavier, but as was said above the .375 H&H is really near the minimum that should be used. These bulls average 1000 Kilo's and have very thick skin and bones. I have seen some hit perfectly with .375's and even .416's take multiple hits to bring them down.

Never shot a water buffalo- I was talking about feral cattle as stated below-

never said anything about doing massive over-kill -
but if and when I decide to go hunt water buffalo I will take the advice of the outfitter as to which weapon is needed.

thank you for your reply!

I was hoping to bring my .416 Remington Sako left handed rifle to whack those varmints. But since it looks like the U.S. gov't won't be letting me take that fine rifle in transit through the States (touching down in L.A. ,, changing airplanes and continuing on to Oz ... ) I shall have to either borrow a gun from Top Predator (who kindly has already made the offer .. ) or rent one from Glenn ,,, he has .375's and a 458 available .. Perhaps I might see one up to his belly in mud ... and with him hopelessly trapped I can just stroll over and bonk him with a big eucalyptus stick .. hammering Thanks Buschcook for putting me on to this outfitter ... hell ,,,, I'll buy the bourbon !! cheers And the price is more than fair. Much better deal than a plainsgame hunt in Africa .. Having said that ... I'm going to whack me a big wartie in August. I got a bet to win against a couple of chaps who I snookered !!! clap I am just going to find a wartie up to his belly in the mud in one of the windmill water troughs .. and with him trapped - no problemo .. I'm hoping to get at least an 8 incher or so ... Question for all you old African hands ? Is it permissible to take a set of wart hog tusks (8 inches or so .. ) into Africa ??? Instead of the other direction ??? Confused

An Aussie pal of mine has had no trouble with his 7mm Mag. How much trouble do you have getting an Aus. permit to bring your rifle with?

I have my permit from Oz here in my house. From the Northern Territory complete with photo and such .. Just a bunch of paper work... the problem with the Alien in transit (which I be) going through the U.S. ... won't allow it. I have a Montana hunting license and the ATF would 'gladly' give me a permit if I was going to leave the airport and go off into the U.S. and do some hunting .. I just can't have a permit to have the gun as checked baggage as I travel through from Calgary to L.A. to Sydney. All this has been rehashed on AR a few times and some folks think that it wouldn't be a problem .. but I really can't take the chance without proper paper work in my grimy little paws .. sofa

Scruffy ,
Have you thought about flying here via somewhere like Hong Kong ? May be able to fly ex. Vancouver and avoid the U.S. altogether for similar money .
I have a friend who flies from Western Australia to Wisconsin that way as it is cheaper than via Sydney into LA .

why dont you catch a flight from vancover direct to australia instead of going through L.A
as far as scrub cattle go its a glorified way of shooting cows which are not fenced in, and buffulo arnt to far behind, i like shooting them as they are a good test on bullets, i found the 200 BARNES TSX to be all that you will ever need, i got full penetration even on angled shots, broke shoulders, and had a few just drop in there tracks ...just put your bullets in the right spot, and the 06 is more than adequate

Bolt Action, that was the comment I was referring to
captdavid, don't automatically assume that because someone is from OZ that they are experts on hunting buffalo or even scrub cattle. My experience is that the ones that actually HAVE a lot of experience have much different opinions than those that just talk like they have lots of experience.

Bring your .30-06 and borrow a larger rifle from the outfitter for the buffalo and the scrub bulls. Any good outfitter will have an adequate .375 (or similar) for hire.

Yeah, I told my travel agent to avoid the U.S. She put me in L.A. Confused I'm going to Namibia in August and I suggested that she get me tickets from Oz straight over to Joeys .. but she said that to do that she would have to put me in all kinds of foreign airports .. ??? And there was a chance that some of the places might not take kindly to Canadian hunting rifles going to Africa .. So I'm returning and then leaving again from Canada.. Life seems complicated and I fear it is mostly my fault.. Frowner

The wild animals will not soon forget the Kiwi and the Canuck . Big Grin.. I suspect. Especially if a salt croc gets me. I understand that their primitive digestion system takes a while ...

Scruffy ,
You need a new travel agent . You can fly straight from Perth to South Africa on Qantas .Perhaps she hasn't heard of them . They have big aeroplanes with a kangaroo on the tail .

Darwin - Perth - Jo'burg, easy.

Maybe her commissions were higher using a different route, OR flying back to Canada and then to South Africa on a different route. Wink

Woodleigh sells a 240 grain bullet specially designed for the 30'06 and tested in culling hunts on Aussie buff. That being said, make sure you have someone backing you up. I put 3 338 bullets into a California Scrub Bull and had a nervous go of it in the brush before a 500 grain 45-70 round ended the day.
