Actually, at L3.73 a gallon, that works out to about $6USD a gallon or about $240USD to fill up! I pay about $1.76USD a gallon if I go to New Jersey, one of the cheapest places in the NE to buy gas. that works out to about L1.11 a gallon!

Half the problem with the figues is the US gallon and UK gallon are differant.

I would still rather have something like a 3L TD that gives me all the power I need at 30mpg and is not so prone water problems as a gas/petrol engine. I am not sure how a TD copes in the dusty conditions over there, but lets say here water is more of an issue than dust!
I like the engine breaking effect of a desiel engine too; put her in low first and I can go down the steepest of slopes with out worrying about using the foot brake.

OK,I live in the big smoke so the prices will be higher in country areas.

Petrol(gas to you Yanks)=96 cents/litre.

Diesel=$1.02

LPG or gas to Aussies = 48cents/litre.



Aus$.72cents/US$1 at the moment.

1 empirial gallon=4.55litres

1US gallon=3.79litres



ps.The approx cost to convert to LPG is US$1500.

Diesel is the standard of all serious 4WD's in the outback. Not the petrol towny cars going for a drive "offroad" on graded gravel roads which are judged more by shiny hubs, carpet and CD players.

All the serious users - mining companies, stations, outfitters etc use diesel, most of the time anyway.

Diesel jerrycans can also be carried in the vehicle with less dangerous fumes and far less danger of fire than petrol.

A diesel motor with a snorkel will ford a river under water where a petrol motor will stop in the middle.

You can also use diesel to wash the grease off your hands if you break down.

One of the big defects is you can't push start a diesel vehicle if the battery is flat.

Far Canal, half the problem this discussion has is we're working in two, possibly three diffrent systems. From now on in this thread I will try to post in OZ units(after all it's your forum!), but I need to know price per unit for things like fuel so can you or somebody else please post going rates for things like Gasoline(87 octane), diesel and LPG? it would make everthing a might simpler to understand if we're all on the same page.

Hmm forgot about that, let's try this again:

$1.76 USD/gallon = $2.11/imperial gallon
L3.11/gallon = L3.73/imperial gallon

L1 = $1.78USD OR $1USD = L.561

So to fill my tank in britain it would be:

40 * $3.11 * $1.78 = $221.43USD

and an Imperial gallon in GBP at US prices is: L1.18

So your right Far, I was off, but not by much!

Bakes dont buy anything with IFS, will severely limit you off road ability. and cost shiteloads to repair / maintain

$10,000-not alot for a 4x4

Suzuki-extremely capable off road-but take forever to get there-cheap to run -too small for anyone over 75kilos
Landrovers-pommy crap
Mitsubishi-Bitsushiti
Nissan patrol-bloody good if you get the coil sprung job,fairly thirsty.
Landcruiser-strong like nissan patrol,also thirsty
Hilux,early leaf sprung ones-go anywhere-cheap to run,fit your budget but rough to ride in

Pick which one suits you and have fun, after owning a 4x4 you will wonder why you didnt do it years ago.

Suzuki would be my choice for a cheap run around ubder $10 000.Cheap as chips to run and fix.

The pick is the long wheel base(soft top only)Not many around,but a better ride.Roof won't rust and more room.

The bigger 4X4's are just too thirsty with fuel at $1 a Litre.

Expect change out of $4000,take the wife on a nice holiday to NZ.

Thanks for the thought Toolmaker, but 44 gallons is about 205 litres and fuel here's at $1.08 a litre. Not a good option
