I am looking for a nice hunt in New Zealand for stag, thar, and chamois. I have never hunted there. I also talk to the folks at DSC convention alot but it seems they are really selling there hunts. Any advice or recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks

You just have to follow your common sense/instinct and find an outfitter who suits the way you wish to conduct YOUR hunt.
Talk to any of your hunting friends that have been down to NZ.
And check out some references from any of the guides you talk to.
I, like all the rest can try the hard sell as its all part of what we do, especially if we've put a considerable investment into attending DSC ,SCI, Fnaws etc
Always be straight up with any guide you talk to so they know exactly what you want in a hunt, then if they are what they say they are they'll be able to put a hunt together that works for you.
You need to get onto this reasonable soon as its now that we book our hunts for 07.
I'm more than happy to help you out with as many questions as you wish to ask about getting down here.

KUDUBULL,
you can't go wrong with Leithen Valley Trophy Hunts.. they are on the South Island. Very good stags, and the tahr and chamois hunting is great.
PM me if ya have any questions..

M98 is right!

Just returned from 3 weeks hunting in NZ.
Went bush in the Taupo region for a week, first Omarou hut, later Golden Hills hut through Heli-Sika. We hunted Sika, heard them, spotted them but didn.t get any because of the bad weather.

Real free range hunting and shooting nice trophy deer in fenced areas are two incomparable matters as I found out myself.
US 'hunters' pay the equivalent of a new car to shoot a stag with a trophy like a Christmas tree. Finding such a stag free range is as difficult in NZ than anywhere else in the world.

If you are really fit and used to climbing at high altitudes you should consider hunting thar on the south island.

If you are after a huge trophy and have the bucks to spend, go shooting with one of the outfitters.

If you want a free range quality hunt, I can provide you with some good contacts in the Nothern Island
