This might be an easy one. If I have a connecting flight in New Zealand enroute to Australia do I need a firearms import permit?

If your baggage / firearm is checked right through to Australia and you intend staying in transit while in NZ no permit is needed. Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

If you say, have an overnight in NZ before you fly out then you can get a Visitors firearms Licence at the airport , from the Police counter. Fast , pretty inexpensive , and good for 12 months ________________________ Old enough to know better

It took them awhile; but the NZ police confirmed what has been said here. No permit needed to transfer flights. That puts NZ a mile ahead of the USA in that regard.
