Going to New Zealand for a hunt in May. Taking my nephew, actually. He wants to try red stag with a bow, and we'll take a rifle for "Plan B" in case the bow opportunities just aren't there.

Would like to know where I can find firearms import restrictions / regulations. Also, any other information on clothing, gear, etc. that you that live there or have been there would care to share.

Many thanks!

Go to Police website www.police.govt.nz and navigate to the firearms bit. You need to have a valid license or equivalent from your home country and pay NZ$25 fee for a visitors firearms permit which is good for 1 year. You can do it at the airport in NZ. For hunting you cant use handguns so stick to a rifle. Bow needs no permit at all. If you stick to a bolt action you wont have any problems at all. If a semi auto better read NZ regulations on military style weapons.

You had better check USA regulations for bringing your rifle back home. Many visitors to USA wish they hadnt tried to bring firearms with them since September 11 a few years ago.

Do you have a hunt booked or where are you planning to hunt? Given you are likely here for a short time you are probably better of booking a guide.

If you do that you can save hassles and use the guides rifle.

What Vince said.

Getting into NZ with a rifle is easy - getting your own rifle back into the US may not be.

If you have the opportunity to use the guides firearm that will save the hassle all together.

No idea on how you go getting your archery kit back into the US but there are definately no restrictions here on bows - but there are several pistol crossbows that are prohibited.

Best idea would be to ask your outfitter.
