Got up at 0330 and nearly went back to bed. Big Grin I was in the hunting area just before sunup and walked down to a stump I knew was there. The stump overlooked a creek about 50 meters away and all my attention was on and around the creek. The scrub either side of the clearing was thick with wattle saplings and as I looked to my left, bugger me there he was! About 30 meters away! He stepped out of the thick crap and didn't make a sound. He looked up and spotted me as I was bringing the rifle up. I froze then thought bugger it, quickly shouldering the rife I touched off the shot. The bullet took him high in the shoulder and spined him. He dropped on the spot. The clearing was such that I could get my truck right down to him...can't get better than that

A friends son ran a tape over him. 25 inches. Left is broken at the tip and it went 24

Hy Tony:

That looks like a dandy.

Congrats on looking up when you did.
Sometimes it does pay to look around a bit.

Long time since I've seen a sambar picture on here.

Thanks for posting, enjoy the eats.

rotflmo Yeah I was laying in bed thinking that Gryph. Its with the taxidermist now I'm sure he'll trim it. I'm doing another longer taxi course next year before I get out of the RAAF. I'll mount this one myself as part of the course.

Nice one Tony. Big congrats. Sambar are not easy, although maybe just this one was an exception. Good to see you had luck on your side after making the effort to get out there.

I always take from the pizzle forward. Easier to cut off later than find some extra.
Only ever had one taxidermist complain that id given him extra work.

Wonderful what happens sometimes when a full bladder wakes you. You can always go back to sleep when the meat is in the chiller. Great result and well deserved.
